I often find myself wishing I had an arsenal of healthier pre-made snacks for when my sweet tooth rears her ugly head. When she takes over, watch out. I can become ravenous, illogical, and momentarily convinced that I haven’t eaten for days.

What do I go for first?

A blizzard.

If there isn’t a Dairy Queen or other ice cream shop within arm’s reach, I take no prisoners and devour whatever’s in sight.

These rampages usually end in a tummy ache and not feeling so great about my unpreparedness.

This simple little recipe is one I keep in regular rotation to help soothe my sweet tooth without much damage.

If you’re not familiar, a Chocolate Orange is an orange flavored chocolate … orange. It’s shaped like an orange and wrapped in aluminum. You smack it on a hard surface to break apart all the orange wedges. It’s a delicious little chocolate candy that I love to keep in the freezer.

As with most of my kitchen pursuits, I crafted a way to satisfy my craving for a Chocolate Orange using healthier methods.

I like to use clementines or tangerines for this recipe. They peal easily and usually have minimal rind on the fruit.

I dip them in melted very dark chocolate. I recommend you go for the highest dark chocolate percentage you can stand. My favorite is Green & Blacks Fair Trade Organic 85% Dark Chocolate. It’s silky smooth and doesn’t taste like coffee grinds – unlike other dark chocolate brands.

A close second is the 60% Ghirardelli Dark Chocolate Chips found in the baking isle.

Staying in line with my Chocolate Orange habits, I like to keep my Healthier Chocolate Orange in the freezer for cool and refreshing access.

Happy snacking!
