Ep. 17: Paleo f(x) Recap

Cassy Joy : Hello! Welcome back to the craziest Fed and Fit podcast we’ve ever recorded.

Charissa Talbot : Number 17. Live, from PaleoFx.

Cassy Joy : Yes. And, Charissa and I, this is the first one we’re recording actually in person with each other, and it’s really exciting because I get to see her face, and there’s people walking by and they’re wondering why we’re talking to the computer.

Cassy Joy : Sitting on the same chair.

Cassy Joy: Sitting on the same chair. We found a corner, and we snuck away. Forgive the background noise, and forget the most likely technical difficulties coming your way, but we wanted to give you guys a quick behind the scenes recap of what’s been going on while we’ve been here.

Charissa Talbot: Woot-woot!

Cassy Joy: Yeah. If you’re just catching this podcast, and you didn’t get the last one and you have no idea what the heck PaleoFx is, it is a very large, very thorough, paleo conference. All things paleo, fitness, functional medicine, all that good stuff. All of the movers and shakers in the community to include bloggers and authors and other vendors that are creating a product to support this lifestyle all get together, we have one big giant family party, and it’s a lot of fun.

Charissa Talbot: It’s like summer camp.

Cassy Joy: It is! It is like summer camp.

Charissa Talbot: Or, I call it my Christmas, because it’s better for me than Christmas. I get really excited.

Cassy Joy: Aww, it is. It’s really exciting. You know, we can jump right into it; it probably won’t be a very long one.

Charissa Talbot: Yes.

Cassy Joy: But I think it would be fun, Charissa, if you and I told briefly what our experiences have been.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah!

Cassy Joy: They’ve probably been a little bit different. {laughs}

Charissa Talbot: Very. We’ve hardly seen each other.

Cassy Joy: We haven’t!

Charissa Talbot: It’s like, oh hey! Ok, gotta go over here. {laughs}

Cassy Joy: Hey girl, you look cute again! Yeah. So it’s been.

Charissa Talbot: Hey girl, hey!

Cassy Joy: {laughs} It’s been a lot of fun. Today is Sunday, it’s the last official day of the conference. It was all day Friday, all day Saturday, and with it being this big event, a lot of bloggers and authors and people who I consider my colleagues and friends.

Charissa Talbot: Mm-hmm.

Cassy Joy: They all come into town, and it’s the one time a year that we’re all in the same spot. It’s hard, because I want to hang out here and talk to everybody, but you also want to spend some quality time.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: So that’s been a lot of fun for me, hanging out with some of my friends that came in. We got a big house, and we just made some good meals, and that’s been fun. Getting some sneak peeks on what some folks are working on and books that are coming out, so that’s been a lot of fun. Eating some neat places; we ate at Sway.

Charissa Talbot: Ooh, nice!

Cassy Joy: Oh it was so good. If you’re in Austin, or you’re coming to Austin, and you really like some fun Thai food, I really recommend Sway. And they have, what is it, sipping vinegar on the menu. I didn’t try it, but I want to go back for it.

Charissa Talbot: You didn’t try it?

Cassy Joy: No, well, I forgot my glasses {laughs} and my friend Stacy had to read me the menu, and I didn’t want her to have to read the whole thing.

Charissa Talbot: Oh, right, true.

Cassy Joy: {laughs} But.

Charissa Talbot: That sounds really good.

Cassy Joy: It was really good. We did that, let’s see, and then I had a cooking demo on Saturday.

Charissa Talbot: Yes, how did your cooking demo go? Did you talk about Gus a lot, as planned?

Cassy Joy: I talked about Gus, I did. I talked about him sometimes because there wasn’t a towel, and I had to squeeze these lemons into my salad. I made the breakfast salad for those of you listening that know the recipes on the blog, and I made it with bacon, and when I squeezed the lemons I got it all over my hands like Rachel Ray does it, and there’s no towel. So I just wiped it on my pants, and then I said, this is really where Gus comes in handy because he likes to come over and be like, you don’t need a towel, it’s so far away.

Charissa Talbot: {laughs}

Cassy Joy: If you missed it, you can catch it on the live stream. I think that’s a thing.

Charissa Talbot: Yes. Mm-hmm. It’s definitely a thing.

Cassy Joy: So, there was that. That was a lot of fun. Got to hang out with some friends that are here. Like Denise, of the Granilla bar.

Charissa Talbot: Yes.

Cassy Joy: I saw some other great friends; Cassy of Fat Face Skin Care. She caught me at Picnik Austin early one morning. My friend Juli and I were there at like 7:02 hoping we could sneak in without anyone noticing us because we literally just rolled out of bed.

Charissa Talbot: Right.

Cassy Joy: And someone behind me goes, are you Cassy? {laughs}

Charissa Talbot: Oh! {laughs}

Cassy Joy: I was like, oh no.

Charissa Talbot: I am! Don’t judge me!

Cassy Joy: It was good. I still had pillow creases on one side of my face, but it was so fun. We waited in line at Franklin’s Barbecue for like 6 hours, or whatever it was.

Charissa Talbot: You are such a trooper.

Cassy Joy: it gets longer every time I tell that story.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: In 3 weeks it will have been a 10-hour wait.

Charissa Talbot: 10 hours.

Cassy Joy: But {laughs}.

Charissa Talbot: I was in line for 5 days!

Cassy Joy: I was. It really didn’t feel that long, because we brought games and things.

Charissa Talbot: That’s nice.

Cassy Joy: Yeah! Anyway, that’s kind of my brief recap. It’s been a lot of fun, and ready to have some more fun.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah, for sure. I think one highlight that Cassy and I did share together in this crazy weekend, was I’m getting to meet Paleo Crumbs in person.

Cassy Joy: Oh yeah! In the flesh.

Charissa Talbot: In the flesh. Her and her mother; oh my gosh. Adorable, cute, wonderful, inspiring, motivating, I can’t wait to see what she does in this community.

Cassy Joy: Yeah, and if you’re, again, listening for the first time, we did a giveaway, Picnik Austin actually sponsored one of our blog giveaways, and Paleo Crumbs, Macy won it, and it’s just so funny how the world works, you guys. I feel like I’m talking to a group of people; there’s like 12 of us in a room together.

Charissa Talbot: I think the universe brought that the way it was supposed to happen.

Cassy Joy: Yeah, it was so cool! She won, and looked her up on Instagram, loved her stuff. She’s got some amazing food photos and just a really, really cool story. Anyways, really neat girl.

Charissa Talbot: Go check her out.

Cassy Joy: So neat to meet her in person.

Charissa Talbot: She’s up and coming.

Cassy Joy: For sure.

Charissa Talbot: For sure.

Cassy Joy: But that’s been fun.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: What else? It’s kind of a blur.

Charissa Talbot: Well, Mark Sisson beat us for best new podcast.

Cassy Joy: Oh.

Charissa Talbot: I don’t know how on earth that happened.

Cassy Joy: {laughs} I almost voted for him. {laughs}

Charissa Talbot: {laughing}

Cassy Joy: No, just kidding.

Charissa Talbot: That’s funny.

Cassy Joy: That was fun though. That was an honor to be nominated, and it was an honor to go cheer on Mark.

Charissa Talbot: Yes.

Cassy Joy: Yeah, it’s been crazy. I feel like I’m a little bit sleep deprived so I’m probably not making a lot of sense.

Charissa Talbot: Me too. I think I’ve had way too much coffee this weekend, just to stay alive. It’s bad.

Cassy Joy: It’s like, as the days have gone by, I’ve gotten droopier, and there’s probably been an increased amount of lipstick on my teeth as the days have gone by, too. {laughs}

Charissa Talbot: {laughs}

Cassy Joy: Day 1, I was really conscious about staying hydrated and I was alert and awake and my hair was big and I had no lipstick on my teeth. And now it’s Sunday and I’m pretty sure they’re pink, and I probably have bags under my eyes. But I’m really happy.

Charissa Talbot: We’re both happy. This is awesome.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Charissa Talbot: So, Thursday night was awesome for us.

Cassy Joy: Yes!

Charissa Talbot: Oh, hey, guys come here for a second!

Cassy Joy: Uh-oh.

Stacy Toth: Are you recording?

Cassy Joy: We’re recording a podcast!

Charissa Talbot: Live! Hey guys!

Jen Sinkler: Podcast bomb!

Charissa Talbot: Say hello to Jen Sinkler and Stacy, just Toth.

Jen Sinkler: Hello!

Stacy Toth: I was like, I’m not on there!

Charissa Talbot: What has been your guys’ highlights from PaleoFx? Tell our fans.

Stacy Toth: Hanging out with the people, of course. This is what I come for, you know? There are so many vendors and all kinds of new things this year, but it’s honestly just reconnecting with all the people that you’re looking at a computer screen through for an entire year.

Cassy Joy: Yeah!

Jen Sinkler: Somebody tweeted yesterday that it was the internet come to life, and it really is.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah!

Jen Sinkler: Some of you guys I’d already met before, and other’s I’m meeting for the first time, and I love it.

Cassy Joy: I’m Cassy, by the way.

Jen Sinkler: Yeah, hi, nice to meet you!

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Stacy Toth: Look at what’s happening!

Charissa Talbot: This is the other half of Fed and Fit.

Cassy Joy: Yes!

Jen Sinkler: I think I get to come on your podcast at some point.

Charissa Talbot: Yes, yes! We want you.

Jen Sinkler: Alright, I’m in.

Cassy Joy: Let’s do it.

Charissa Talbot: Ok, great!

Cassy Joy: This is a teaser.

Charissa Talbot: Teaser, upcoming episode. Jen Sinkler.

Stacy Toth: And from personal experience, Jen is amazing on podcasts.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Charissa Talbot: Perfect.

Jen Sinkler: We’ll have a good time.

Charissa Talbot: Awesome! Where are you guys off to now?

Jen Sinkler: Off to the speakers lounge where there’s…

Stacy Toth: Supposed freebies.

Cassy Joy: Oh, that’s where I’m going!

Charissa Talbot: Nice.

Stacy Toth: We’re going to go get all the stuff first.

Cassy Joy: Oh no! {laughs}

Jen Sinkler: I poked my head in there yesterday but I didn’t know what it was, so I thought I couldn’t go in there.

Cassy Joy: It’s this way?

Charissa Talbot: It’s upstairs.

Jen Sinkler: At the end of the hall.

Charissa Talbot: I’ll show you where it is.

Cassy Joy: Ok. Maybe we’ll do another giveaway!

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Charissa Talbot: Stay tuned for the Fed and Fit.

Jen Sinkler: Alright.

Cassy Joy: Bye guys! Thank you!

Charissa Talbot: So awesome. See, PaleoFx is so much fun. You run into the coolest people. So, back to our regular scheduled programming. For me, Friday was my fun day. It was definitely Christmas morning for me. I spent all Friday on the vendor floor. I had intentions of going to talks, but just ending up meeting and talking and hand shaking and just seeing what cool new products are out there and companies and connecting with people I haven’t seen and it was just a really fun day. So that was awesome.

Cassy Joy: I love that. The vendor floor is definitely Charissa’s jam.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: I get, I enjoy it, but I like talking to people. I get swept up in conversations one on one, and I would need 2 weeks on a vendor floor, I feel like.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah. And I feel like even though I spent all Friday on the vendor floor, I feel like I could spend another 2 days there, really meeting everybody. So that was awesome. And fun. Saturday I had a really awesome time. Sarah Ballantyne, you guys know I work for her, she was being filmed for a TV show with Pete Evans, and he’s from Australia. He’s known as a paleo chef over there; he has a cooking show, and let me tell you, he is dreamy in person. Oh my goodness. But that was really fun to be behind the scenes, and see all that go down, and just see another world, because I’ve never been around the world of TV before, so that was interesting, you know?

Cassy Joy: Ah, nice.

Charissa Talbot: To see how everything works behind the scene. And his team was awesome. They were super sweet and nice. It was just a really fun morning and afternoon. So today is the last day, I’m really sad! But I’m also really excited to get back to routine.

Cassy Joy: Yeah. It will be nice to be in my own bed again.

Charissa Talbot: Mm-hmm.

Cassy Joy: But again, I look forward to this weekend as soon as it’s over.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah. You’re like, can it be next year?

Cassy Joy: The next one. I know, I know!

Charissa Talbot: You kind of get on a high for a couple of days after.

Cassy Joy: You do, you do. It’s a lot of fun. Really grateful for the opportunity to present. So happy to see so many wonderful people, and to see this community grow. A shout out to two members of the Fed and Fit team, Megan and Kelly. This is the first time, one is helping me with marketing and the other with content development, and I go to meet them in person. It was so fun, and they really got to experience PaleoFx. They just said that it was a welcoming environment, and I think that’s a really good way to put it. Everyone is here to support each other and just have a good time and learn as much as possible. It’s been an awesome experience. I really recommend, if you’re thinking about going in the future; go ahead and just book a ticket, and wing it.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: You don’t really need a group to go with, because I promise you’re going to make friends as you go. You really won’t regret coming.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah. And if you hop online, there is always a PaleoFx room share group that pops up on Facebook about 6 months ahead of time so you can always find really fun, cool people to stay with and connect with. So yeah, you can just come and meet all of your internet friends.

Cassy Joy: Yeah!

Charissa Talbot: So much fun.

Cassy Joy: Come meet everybody in person. Putting faces with names is, like Stacy and Jen were just saying, is half the fun.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah. And, I’ll say one more thing. We’re recording this on Sunday; tomorrow is Monday. My No Cook Paleo travel kits have been selling here at the convention very well; super excited. Thank you for everyone who bought one; I really appreciate it. And I believe that I may have a link for the podcast where you can preorder online, so you can always be prepared for that when you do travel. So I’m very excited about that. That’s about it.

Cassy Joy: That’s about it!

Charissa Talbot: That’s about it.

Cassy Joy: Yeah, we wanted to keep it short and sweet. So anyways, thank you guys for listening to this garble; I hope it comes through clearly.

Charissa Talbot: {laughs}

Cassy Joy: And I think that’s all we’ve got for you today, but we’ll be back again next week; next Monday with some fresh content. I know you guys have been running into a bunch of people who are listeners to the podcast while we’re here, and people keep saying they love the stress one, the sleep one.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: So we’ll start putting together more shows that really are information packed and still really fun.

Charissa Talbot: And we’ll be well rested, hydrated, and recovered from this weekend.

Cassy Joy: {laughs} Yeah! Both my eyes will be all the way open, as opposed to what they look like right now. Anyway, thanks again for listening and we’ll be back again next week!
