Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. Today we’ve got episode 16; I can’t believe we’ve made it; it’s our sweet 16 Charissa.

Charissa Talbot: I know!

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Charissa Talbot: It’s a celebration kind of podcast. I think we have a perfect topic for that too. I’m just excited.

Cassy Joy: We do! I think it’s great. I love the idea at having another chance/shot at a sweet 16. Today were going to talk about some of our top 5 travel tips to help you stay on top of your food and fitness game and really feel like you’re in control, and not that travel is in control. We’re also going to introduce PaleoFx and also talk a little; if you’re going to PaleoFx, give you some of our behind the scenes thoughts on some of the best things to do, see, and experience while you’re in Austin, Texas. So let’s jump on into it. Good morning Charissa!

Charissa Talbot: Good morning! I am excited to share tons of news today. So excited.

Cassy Joy: Oh my goodness, you do have a lot of news, don’t you?

Charissa Talbot: I do. I do. Well, it’s just big news, that’s all.

Cassy Joy: No, it’s exciting.

Charissa Talbot: I’m excited. Yeah. Anyways, what’s going on with you?

1. Updates from Cassy [1:32]

Cassy Joy: Oh, well.

Charissa Talbot: Oh, wait.

Cassy Joy: What?

Charissa Talbot: I know what’s going on with you. For anyone that hasn’t, please, if you happen to be on Cassy’s Facebook page, go look at her engagement photos. Oh my gosh! I died; I died. They were so beautiful!

Cassy Joy: Oh, you’re so sweet. We had so much fun. We were really honored; Jana Williams, our photographer, Jana from Alabama is the name of her blog. She has a beautiful photography blog, and we were honored she chose about 10 of our pics from our photo shoot and posted them on her blog. So you can go and check those out, and get a sneak peak. She posted two of the looks, and there’s two more that we did on the beach that I’ll probably share as time goes on. I’m trying not to overwhelm people with all the pictures, but it’s like the first time in my life I have a whole bunch of pictures that are pretty {laughs} and I want to share them. So just so you know.

Charissa Talbot: You have lots of pretty photos. But I know what you’re talking about. It’s like, photo shoot. It’s fun.

Cassy Joy: It is; I just want to share them all, and that’s not possible, you know, in an Instagram type format.

Charissa Talbot: Right.

Cassy Joy: So, just so you know, I’m not going to bombard you with wedding photos. But that’s going on, you know, that’s the pros. The cons are I’m having wedding nightmares, but that’s normal, right?

Charissa Talbot: What kind of nightmares?

Cassy Joy: Like, legitimate nightmares, not like things are going badly. Things are going great during the daytime, but at nighttime I’m having these dreams. The reoccurring dream of late, and this probably has everything to do with the fact that, I don’t know if I mentioned it here or somewhere else. I know I talked about it on Instagram a while back. But my wedding planner that we were working with, she sent us a note, and she had to pull out of her job working with us, for very good reason. She’s now expecting the birth of her first child on that weekend, so I’m really excited for her and it just created a new opportunity to look for somebody else.

And I’ve been talking to some folks, some really great people reached out because of that post, and we’re still sorting through some of it. But because we don’t have a planner, and because my mom and I are planning this wedding, and because we’re the first in the family we don’t quite know what we’re doing. We can plan a mean event, but this is a whole nother beast.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: I keep having these nightmares that I’m standing at the back of the room, getting ready to walk up the aisle; and by the way, it’s hosted for some reason in a barbecue restaurant here in San Antonio.

Charissa Talbot: {laughing}

Cassy Joy: {laughs} And I’m standing at one of the doors, an everyone is sitting at their picnic tables, and the preacher is up at the front on this stage, and they’re like, well who’s supposed to do what when?

Charissa Talbot: {laughs} Oh no!

Cassy Joy: So I pick up my dress and I walk up to the stage, and I whisper to them, well this is supposed to happen first, and then this. And then I pick up my dress and I walk back, and by this time people are getting distracted and eating their barbecue.

Charissa Talbot: Oh my goodness.

Cassy Joy: So, that’s what’s going on.

Charissa Talbot: I think your subconscious is just a little stressed out, and you know, it’s all going to come together. It’s going to be beautiful.

Cassy Joy: It is. It is going to be beautiful. I need to find someone that’s going to help plan it for me. {laughs}

Charissa Talbot: Yeah. And if something goes wrong, it will be a great story.

Cassy Joy: Oh my gosh, don’t you love those stories? I mean, that’s what it’s all about. I’m kind of; we’re having an outdoor ceremony, and we’ve had some people who keep chirping about, you know, oh well if it rains it’s going to be really bad! I’m like, if it rains then that means it’s supposed to rain, and that will be our story, you know?

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: Just, move it into the barn and we’ll have a beautiful, rainy wedding.

Charissa Talbot: Exactly.

Cassy Joy: Anyway, so there’s that. My other not giant news {laughs} but for some reason I need to talk about it.

Charissa Talbot: Hey, you know, you gotta talk about what you gotta talk about, and this is our platform. We can do it here. {laughs}

Cassy Joy: {laughs} Thank you. I needed the validation. So we mentioned a while back some of our entertainment shows of choice, and I confessed that I started watching a show called Pretty Little Liars on Netflix. It’s the show that I watch when Austin is not around. And, I’m watching this show, and I’ve just decided that I need a support group to watch this show with. {laughs} Because, maybe there is one out there. I’m sure there’s a Facebook group or something. But I just need someone to talk to about this show; it’s driving me bananas. I want to know who A is; and it’s so brilliant, if you watch the show, you probably know what I’m talking about. Or if your daughter’s watch the show, you’re probably rolling your eyes at me {laughs}. But it’s just so brilliantly done. It keeps you on the edge of your seat without getting exhausted. Anyway, so there’s that.

That’s a lot of the fun stuff going on. I am dying to hear your news, though. Please jump in.

2. Updates from Charissa [6:29]

Charissa Talbot: Well, we have some news, together.

Cassy Joy: Oh yeah, we do!

Charissa Talbot: Which is very exciting, which we were like, what, what, really?! So PaleoFx for the first time this year is doing their annual Fx awards is what they’re calling them. And Cassy and I, the podcast, got nominated for best new podcast, which I’m so excited.

Cassy Joy: Woo-hoo!

Charissa Talbot: Now, there’s a couple of other podcasts that we’re up against. Voting is already closed; unfortunately there’s no chance for you to vote now, but thank you to everyone who did vote for us. I’m just excited that we got nominated and noticed, I don’t know. It’s really exciting!

Cassy Joy: It is really exciting. I’m humbled; I’m honored. And some of the folks that we were nominated next to, it’s pretty cool.

Charissa Talbot: I know.

Cassy Joy: So thank you so much.

Charissa Talbot: And, I mean, the cool thing that I think for Cassy this year, which is awesome, is that Paleo Magazine recognized her as someone to watch, and now your podcast is best new podcast. I’m so excited. Next year, I’m excited. {laughs}

Cassy Joy: {laughs} I feel like I’ve created some big shoes, now I’ve just got to go fill them for myself.

Charissa Talbot: You’re going to do wonderful at that.

Cassy Joy: There’s a lot of work to be done.

Charissa Talbot: Wonderful at that.

Cassy Joy: Oh thank you.

Charissa Talbot: So here’s my big news that I’ve been working on behind the scenes for the last couple of months. So, today is the first day I’m announcing it, and I’m so excited. Oh my gosh, I can’t believe this is happening now. I am announcing the No Cook Paleo travel pack. I’m going to be selling them exclusively at PaleoFx. I’m just so excited to be able to put this together. And it’s going to be perfect for those of you that are going to PaleoFx, because most of us have to travel, or get on the plane or go home, so you can pick up your travel pack at the One Stop Paleo Shop booth, and be ready to go on your way for your car trip or your plane ride.

Cassy Joy: Brilliant.

Charissa Talbot: So, One Stop Paleo Shop has partnered with me on this, and the Monday after PaleoFx ends, this travel kit will go on sale online and available to everybody. And I am so excited. So anytime now when you have a trip coming up, or just want to keep some snacks in your car; I mean there are so many reasons that this kit is going to be helpful for you, and I picked my most favorite brands, and everything that I would want in a well rounded kit to get me through a time where maybe I couldn’t get to some good food. I’m so excited! {laughs}

Cassy Joy: That’s so awesome. I know what’s in the pack, and you guys are in for a treat. It’s definitely something I would want to buy.

Charissa Talbot: Yes. So, in the pack, we have Kasandrinos travel sized olive oil, who we just had on the podcast a couple of episodes back.

Cassy Joy: And if you missed that you guys; I’m sorry, Charissa.

Charissa Talbot: No, go ahead.

Cassy Joy: I’m just going to jump in really quickly. Remember that Tony Kasandrinos offered a 10% off coupon to everybody who listens to this podcast, so when you go to his website, if you want to go ahead of time before the travel pack that you’re going to get at PaleoFx, type in the code FEDANDFIT spelled out like that, and it will get you 10% off your whole order. So, sorry. Take it away!

Charissa Talbot: No, no, go ahead.

Cassy Joy: So, Kasandrinos olive oil, what else is in there?

Charissa Talbot: The travel size, you get our favorite, the Redmond’s Real Salt travel sized.

Cassy Joy: Yum.

Charissa Talbot: Which is so helpful to always have a little travel size of olive oil and salt, I feel like.

Cassy Joy: Yeah.

Charissa Talbot: Now, I’ve got my favorite flavor of Epic bar, the bison, is in there.

Cassy Joy: My favorite too.

Charissa Talbot: Because I love my Epic bars. I put an Rx bar in there; blueberry. Now I will tell you, when I first heard of Rx bar I thought, mm, sounds more like a workout/protein bar, it sounds like there might be some shady ingredients in there, just because of the title and the name.

Cassy Joy: Mm-hmm.

Charissa Talbot: Boy, did I judge a book by its cover. Once I actually got them and tried them and read the ingredients, they’re really clean bars, and they are delicious, so I was super excited to put them in my kit.

Cassy Joy: They’re so good.

Charissa Talbot: And the blueberry is my favorite. I love it.

Cassy Joy: {laughs} It’s my favorite too. I have to jump in here too. I am with you. I didn’t understand the Rx bar wonder until they very graciously sent me some samples, and they have been keeping me alive for the past 3 days, because they have been very, very long days. They’re so delicious.

Charissa Talbot: They are!

Cassy Joy: And it’s just like you said. If you have a nut intolerance, I don’t know that there’s an option yet.

Charissa Talbot: Yet, because I do know there might be something in the works. Possibly.

Cassy Joy: {laughs} Yeah. But they’re really, really great. And they kind of have the consistency of a protein bar if you’re used to protein bars. I just think they’re 100 times more delicious.

Charissa Talbot: Mm-hmm. Yeah.

Cassy Joy: Anyways, yeah, I’m with you.

Charissa Talbot: In the kit, I love having the Epic bar and the Rx bar, because between those two, you’re getting two types of really great protein, quality protein, and tons of flavor, and man is that going to keep you full. Now, onto the three last things the travel kit that are my fun zone, which you have to have. So, our friends at the Granilla bar made me a travel sized dark chocolate and honey flavor.

Cassy Joy: Yum. That’s my favorite.

Charissa Talbot: I’m so excited. Jackson’s Honest Sweet Potato chips, travel size. I am so excited that that’s going to be in my kit. So excited.

Cassy Joy: By travel size do you mean a whole bag, because I could travel with one of those.

Charissa Talbot: {laughing} Listen, I tried to keep the size small so people could put this somewhere. But no, it’s the actual travel size.

Cassy Joy: Not everybody wants a giant bag of chips sticking out of their purse like me.

Charissa Talbot: Well, you know.

Cassy Joy: If you’re wondering how to find me at PaleoFx, that’s what I’ll look like. {laughing}

Charissa Talbot: And last but definitely not least, another local Austin company, also. Love Bean fudge is doing a little travel sized squeeze pack of his essentially raw for me, and I am so excited. So these are a lot of my local favorite, I’m just so excited. And if you guys haven’t checked out One Stop Paleo Shop, definitely go check them out. They have so many cool products on their site.

And like I said, a week from now, the Monday after PaleoFx, the travel kit will be available online, and when it’s actually up for everyone to buy online, I will definitely give you guys the link for that so you can watch out on my Instagram for that. So excited. And, here’s the best part. All that, you get for $20. Such a great price.

Cassy Joy: I think it’s a great value. You’ve taken kind of all of the favorites, put them in one spot, and made it really handy.

Charissa Talbot: Mm-hmm.

Cassy Joy: That’s awesome! I can’t wait to get mine.

Charissa Talbot: I know! So stop by if you’re going to PaleoFx, stop by the One Stop Paleo Shop booth and pick up your kit.

Cassy Joy: Woop!

Charissa Talbot: So excited!

Cassy Joy: Ok, before we jump into the rest of the show, I totally glazed over.

Charissa Talbot: Oh yeah!

Cassy Joy: Reminder; we need to remind. We are starting up our Fed and Fit book club, so any of you fellow bookworms out there, feel free to play along. This month, the month of April, we are reading Yes, Please by Amy Poehler. And t is a memoir/hilarious/inspirational/woman go take on the world kind of guide.

Charissa Talbot: Mm-hmm.

Cassy Joy: And she’s big, if you’re one of those people who is a big believer in what may be right for you is not necessarily right for me, you know, let’s all go do what’s right for each other, and that’s something she says over and over in the book. Good for you, not good for me.

Charissa Talbot: {laughs}

Cassy Joy: So if you want some validation from somebody who is kind of in the bright lights of Hollywood and get some behind the scene peeks. {laughs} So many “e’s” in that sentence.

Charissa Talbot: Yes.

Cassy Joy: It’s a great one, you’re going to love it. So listen to that. Or read it.

Charissa Talbot: Awesome. We’ve got so many good things going on.

Cassy Joy: We do. It’s a bunch of fun stuff.

Charissa Talbot: Loving it.

3. Top 5 travel tips [15:16]
Cassy Joy: We like to keep nice and dense. Ok. So, today we’re going to talk, we’re going to cover first some of our top 5 travel tips, and then we’re going to jump into a little bit about PaleoFx. It’s going to be an overview for some of you who are not familiar with PaleoFx, it may be an introduction so you know what the heck we’re talking about. And for those of you who are familiar with it; or if you’re even making the trip to Austin to attend, we’ve got some really great insights for you.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah. And, side note, Cassy will put the link in the show notes, but there is going to be a lot of live streaming going on. So if you’re at home and you can’t make it, you can catch a lot of the stuff on live stream.

Cassy Joy: That’s great.

Charissa Talbot: Which is awesome. So cool.

Cassy Joy: Yeah, I think that’s a great point. I will do that.

Charissa Talbot: Cassy and I will wave if we see the camera, say hi to all of y’all.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Charissa Talbot: Or at least I will. I don’t know.

Cassy Joy: I’ll wave. I’ll be that crazy waving person, don’t you worry.

Charissa Talbot: Good. Good.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Charissa Talbot: Alright, so travel tips. Cassy, let’s get into these. What’s your number one travel tip?

Cassy Joy: Ok, so number one. And I do quite a bit of traveling, so please know that these are road tested, this is not something that I just made up.

Charissa Talbot: {laughs} Yes.

Cassy Joy: Number one, bring snacks. There’s nothing worse than, and I’ve been there so I’m speaking from this point, or this place of having not prepared. There’s nothing worse than rushing to the airport, and maybe you had an early flight, you don’t feel like you got much sleep, and you’re doing good just to get there on time and through security.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: You finally get to the airport, and you realize that I need to eat breakfast, and there’s a Cinnabun {laughs} in this airport and there’s no other option. And I know if I have a Cinnabun at 7 a.m., I’m going to feel really bad all day long.

Charissa Talbot: {laughing}

Cassy Joy: So bring some snacks. And I don’t say bring snacks to necessarily snack on, because if you guys follow my Fed and Fit project closely, or have heard some of the conversations, I’m not a huge advocate of just straight up snacking.

Charissa Talbot: Right.

Cassy Joy: But I think it’s good to bring snacks for meal replacements when you’re traveling.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah. Like a No Cook Paleo travel kit.

Cassy Joy: Exactly! What a great tie in Charissa, you brilliant girl.

Charissa Talbot: Genius! {laughs} kidding.

Cassy Joy: I’m not, I think you’re brilliant. So bring some snacks to help replace meals when you need one. You never know when there’s going to be an emergency; and I promise if you’re traveling via airport, there’s always going to be some occasion.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: Or to supplement a meal. There are so many times when I go out to eat, and let’s say I’m on my game. I’m going to order that grilled chicken salad, and I’m going to ask for no dressing and no cheese, and squeeze a lemon and that’s going to be my lunch. And then the bring out the grilled chicken salad, and they essentially cut up a chicken tender, and that’s all the chicken I get. You know, when you’re traveling, snacks can really help bolster some of those meals so you’re not famished before dinner time.

Charissa Talbot: And I love that combo of I was saying, now that I’ve found these Rx bars, I love the combo of an Epic bar and an Rx bar.

Cassy Joy: Yeah.

Charissa Talbot: You get a ton of protein, and other great, I just love that. Those two together.

Cassy Joy: Yeah, I think that’s great. I think the most important thing to do when you’re buying prepacked goods; this is just a total side note, so forgive me.

Charissa Talbot: No, go ahead.

Cassy Joy: I think it’s good if you really want to know what’s in the bar, you can read the ingredients and kind of get an idea. Rx bars are sweetened with dates, for example, two dates. But most of them have around 10 grams of sugar, so watch the sugar. If I’m quoting that correctly. I ate one this morning, too. {laughs}

Charissa Talbot: {laughs} Mm-hmm.

Cassy Joy: Yeah, just watch the sugar on the back of the bars. But they’re great to help supplement your meals. Some of my favorite snacks to bring when I’m traveling; I will bring and pre-peel hard boiled eggs. That’s a really easy one.

Charissa Talbot: Yes.

Cassy Joy: And if you’ve got Charissa’s travel pack, you can sprinkle some of that sea salt on it.

Charissa Talbot: Mm-hmm.

Cassy Joy: Hard boiled eggs are great; Rx bars are one of my new favorites. Kale chips, homemade jerky; all that good stuff. The sky is the limit. Or you could really think outside the box, bring a can of sardines and unmake some friends on an airplane. {laughs}

Charissa Talbot: Yep. Hey, you know, I have been on an airplane before when someone walks in with a McDonald’s bag, and that’s like the perfect opportunity to just pull out my sardines. Be like, yeah? Mm’k we can play that game. Sure.

Cassy Joy: {laughing}

Charissa Talbot: Tit for tat. Tit for tat, baby.

Cassy Joy: There’s nothing like walking through an airport when you pass the Cinnabun and the McDonald’s to remind you how enticing the Standard American Diet is.

Charissa Talbot: Yep. Ok, number 2. I love this one, this is probably one of my favorites.

Cassy Joy: Oh, good. Ok, so number 2 is bring an empty water bottle with you that you can fill out. Sometimes I forget this, and when I get to the airport, I go through security, and I’m like, oh gosh darn it, I forgot my water bottle, so I march myself to the magazine stand and I buy a $5 Smart Water. And then I hang on to that bottle for like a solid week.

Charissa Talbot: {laughs}

Cassy Joy: And my family before has been like, why do you have this? Did you buy a case of Smart Water? I’m like, no, I’m going to get my money out of this bottle I spent $5 on at the airport. It just makes it so much easier on you to make sure that you’re staying on top of your water hydration game when you travel.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: It’s so easy to get dehydrated and behind when you’re up in the air, plus airplanes are dehydrating in their own right. So if you’ve got a bottle with you, you can fill it up when you’re going places, and not have to depend on restaurants or water fountains or spend a fortune on buying bottles.

Charissa Talbot: And like you said, here, getting those water bottles that actually have the filter in them, so you can just go right from the tap and those bottles will actually filter the water, which is excellent.

Cassy Joy: Exactly. I’ve had one of those; to be completely transparent, I have not found one that I really like yet. I’m sure it’s out there, I just haven’t tested it.

Charissa Talbot: No, I agree. It’s like hit or miss, I don’t know.

Cassy Joy: It is. My problem with them; I have one that my very sweet friends gave me a couple of years ago for Christmas, and it has the filter actually in the cap, the part that you drink out of, and it’s hard to drink out of.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: It’s like you have to really pull the water out.

Charissa Talbot: One of our listeners needs to take this idea and run with it, and make a great water bottle that has a filtration system and we’ll help you market and sell it.

Cassy Joy: Yes, please do. I’m happy to give away all these ideas if someone out there will actually do them.

Charissa Talbot: Yes. Ok, number 3. I love this one too. I do this a loot.

Cassy Joy: Oh good. Ok, so when you travel, sometimes you really do feel like you’re at the mercy of wherever you’re going on what you’re going to eat and drink.

Charissa Talbot: Mm-hmm.

Cassy Joy: And the truth is, you can really get ahead of the game by bringing your own tea bags. They’re really light, they’re really small, and they fit into your purse, wherever you want to bring them. My favorite brand is Traditional Medicinals. They make some really wonderful flavors. And even if you’re not a tea drinker, or a coffee drinker, I’m a coffee drinker for example. So I will drink the coffee anywhere, and I’m sure you could bring your own coffee, too. But, the reason I like to bring tea bags when I travel especially is because sometimes when you travel, like if you’re traveling to Austin, Texas for PaleoFx in a week, you tend to eat out and you kind of push the limits so you can experience fun new restaurants and fun new flavors, and sometimes that can really upset your stomach. So if you bring with you maybe, I don’t know, some Traditional Medicinal ginger tea, it can really help calm your stomach at the end of the night.

Charissa Talbot: Peppermint tea also helps with; I like the peppermint tea for my stomach, but the ginger is good too. Both of them, yeah.

Cassy Joy: I think that’s great, you can bring both. And both of those are caffeine free, they’re just herbal teas, so you can drink them at night before you go to bed, and it really helps. So that’s a good one.

Charissa Talbot: The other thing I will note about bringing your own coffee, or drinking whatever coffee you have; our friend Naomi has these butter cups, good butter cups now that you can order online, and you’ve got your bulletproof right there with you, you can take it in your purse.

Cassy Joy: Love it. I think that’s great. And if you’re not familiar with Naomi, she’s the owner and chief master mind behind Picnik, which is one of the best paleo friendly food trucks you’ll ever find, and it happens to be in Austin, Texas.

Charissa Talbot: Yes ma’am.

Cassy Joy: Ok. Number 4. {laughs} I was thinking about saying number 4 in Spanish, and then I realized I don’t know that much Spanish. {laughing}. I think its numero quattro, is that right?

Charissa Talbot: Yeah, that’s right. {laughing}

Cassy Joy: Hi, my name is Cassy Garcia, and I don’t speak a lick of Spanish. Ok. Number 4. This is one of my favorite ones to do when I’m traveling, especially when I’m traveling by myself. Because when you’re by yourself, it’s easy to just kind of stick to yourself, you go to the hotel room, you’re going to go to your meetings, and then you’re going to go back to your hotel room and you’re like, well maybe I’ll go down to the hotel gym. I think this is a great way to get out. I say if you’re especially into the fitness scene when you’re at home; whether you like to yoga or Crossfit, try to carry that through when you travel. Do a little bit of leg work; a little research before you actually hop on the plane or hop in the car to see what kind of studios are around where you’re going, and what are they like, and investigate some drop in fees.

I’ve made some of my favorite friends when I travel by myself because I branched out. I went to; oh gosh, Biloxi, Mississippi for example. Shout out to Biloxi Crossfit if anybody there is listening. But several years ago I traveled to Biloxi, Mississippi; I think it’s Mississippi; oh my gosh, I’m going to sound like such a dumb-dumb {laughs} if it’s not. But I traveled there a few years ago and I dropped into their Crossfit, made some great friends, and they invited me out to dinner that night, and we had a great time. So I think it’s a great way to meet the town in some ways, you know, beyond just food and maybe your colleagues that you’re out to connect with. So there’s that.

And then number 5, jumping right into it, on the same theme, do some legwork ahead of time and research restaurants. My family and my sisters always joke that my vacations or trips are planned around all the meals. {laughs} That’s what I do. I travel to eat, and it’s so true. I wake up, and I know exactly where I want to go to breakfast, and then as soon as breakfast is done, ok we’ve got 2.5 hours to hang out and then we need to hop in the car and go to lunch.

Charissa Talbot: {laughs} Yep.

Cassy Joy: {laughs} Anyway, I think it’s great. It’s a good way to kind of connect again with the town, find some of the healthier options. Because they’re out there; like I said, you just have to do a little bit of research. And hopefully, we’re going to save you some research in a little bit if you are coming to Austin, we’re going to give you some of our favorite restaurants to attend. But it can really help you find the best prices; maybe connect with some of the local business owners, wherever you’re going. And my favorite tool to use for that is Yelp. I’m kind of a Yelp fiend, I have it on the home page of my phone.

Charissa Talbot: Me too.

Cassy Joy: So, those are my 5 tips.

Charissa Talbot: Another thing, back to the Crossfit boxes. A lot of time, what you can do, because a lot of the Crossfit boxes will have a drop in fee, but what I have found, which is kind of like a win-win, a lot of times if you buy a T-shirt, they’ll take that as your drop in fee, and then you’ve got a great T shirt, you’ve met some new friends, and you have a new workout. Many times I’ve done that, and most of the boxes are like, yeah, just buy a T-shirt and jump in on a workout.

Cassy Joy: That’s dead on.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah, I love that. I love that about Crossfit. And just so you know, if you’re looking for a place for yoga here in Austin, there’s a bunch of studios that have donation only, so you can look that up to get in with that. Where it’s just you come, and maybe make a $5 or $8 donation and jump in on a class. Yoga studios are great for that, too.

Cassy Joy: Yeah, I think that’s great. And you know, this just makes me think a little bit. I mean, if I pull back and think of it from more of a 50,000 foot view, when you travel I think you can take one of two approaches. You can travel to be a tourist, which means that you’re totally out of your element, you didn’t bring any, really, of your comforts of home and you’re just going to go to whatever the highlights are of the town that you’re going to. And that’s totally fine; sometimes it’s fun to travel like a tourist.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: And the other approach is to travel as if you’re living there. So you kind of get to experience the town in your own language, and that’s kind of the way that I personally like to travel. So that’s where a lot of these tips are coming from. I like to, even if I’m only there for 3 days and 2 nights, what would it be like if I packed up all my bags and I move…

Charissa Talbot: That was my new city! What would I do?

Cassy Joy: Yeah, exactly! And it kind of leaves a different impression on you in that way. If I’m going to New York City, what would it kind of feel like to live here? So I bring my ginger tea, and I bring my paleo snacks, and I don’t feel sick and miserable because I’m eating foods that aren’t good for me because I didn’t do some research, and I’m exercising, and I’m going on the running trails that I looked up ahead of time on Map My Run, you know?

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: Anyways, that’s kind of where these are coming from.

Charissa Talbot: Yep. And a little side note to working out here in Austin; the locals call it Town Lake, although it’s really a river. But the cool thing is, around the lake you have different bridges you can cross. So you can either do a 2 mile run, a 3 mile run, a 6 mile run, or if you do the whole entire loop, which is really fun and if you have time to do it, it’s 10.5 miles, which is great for a walk jog combo, or if you’re an avid runner you can do the whole thing. But it’s really beautiful, very scenic, and Pinto and I, we do that all the time. We love it.

Cassy Joy: It’s beautiful. It is beautiful. There’s also, you don’t have to do the whole route, like Charissa said. When I lived in Austin for a little while, there was a 2.5 mile route that was my jam. I walked half of it, and I kind of fake jogged the other half. {laughs}

Charissa Talbot: Yeah. And the other fun thing to do on the lake is you can rent kayaks, or there’s also tons of bike rentals, too. So all great options for while you’re here, because the weather is going to be gorgeous, hopefully, fingers crossed, and you know, why not get outside and enjoy it. So lots of options there.

4. A brief overview of PaleoFx [30:32]

Charissa Talbot: Ok. Let’s move on. This is going to be a longer show, but that’s ok. We’re giving you guys tons of information for those of you going to PaleoFx, all this section is for you. If you don’t care and you’re not going, you can just turn us off now and get on with your day. {laughs}

Cassy Joy: And if you are leaving, I wish you a very happy day.

Charissa Talbot: Have a wonderful day, yes.

Cassy Joy: And if you’re sticking with us, then thank you.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah, and then come and say hi to us at PaleoFx, please.

Cassy Joy: Yes.

Charissa Talbot: Ok. So, Cassy, what’s PaleoFx?

Cassy Joy: Oh! You’re going to ask me! {laughs} I was going to ask you.

Charissa Talbot: {laughs} Oh! Well, I mean, we can do that.

Cassy Joy: {laughs} I’ll jump in. PaleoFx is; I’m going to humble brag on it a little bit.

Charissa Talbot: That’s ok.

Cassy Joy: PaleoFx is probably the, I mean I believe it is, the largest paleo conference in the world. There are some other really big ones that are really great, but I think PaleoFx probably draws the most speakers and the most attendees. You can correct me if I’m wrong, there. But it’s a concentrated group of all of the authors, bloggers, scientists, exercise sports nutrition folks, and real food business owners. All the brands, the food, the wellness products, everything. Everybody gathers in one spot, Austin, Texas, for one long weekend.

Charissa Talbot: Mm-hmm.

Cassy Joy: And there’s just, there’s several stages that are going on at the same tie with a bunch of different presenters, and they talk about everything from being pregnant and having a baby in a paleo lifestyle, you know, what is the science behind that. And you’re hearing this from people like Chris Kresser, for example, who is one of my most trusted sources as far as pure science goes in the paleo community, among a bunch of others.

You could essentially hear it from the horses’ mouth. There’s a Q&A opportunity at all of these things. You get to see cooking demos from some of your favorite food bloggers, and you get to really sit there and look these business owners in the eyes. The Granilla bar is going to be there, so you can meet Denise and Kevin, and ask them about their story. So it’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with a bunch of like minded individuals, and you really walk away refreshed and excited about your lifestyle. Maybe you’ve got some new ideas, maybe you just want to go share it some more with the world. So it’s a really fun opportunity to connect.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah. I just, for me, I remember the first PaleoFx I went to was in 2012, and I had only been paleo for about 6-8 months at that point. And I remember going, and for the first time not feeling alone. I just got so pumped up, and I was like, wow, this is my community, this is my family. This is what I want to be involved in, and Cassy and I were talking about this before we got on to record.

It’s kind of like this place where all these people who, a lot of us work from home or a lot of us are in gym clothes all day long because we’re working at a gym or running our own businesses. Maybe you’re just an avid paleo follower, and it’s your lifestyle, and you’ve got a regular job and it’s a place where we all converge, and it’s just so fun to meet people in real life. They go from that icon on Instagram or that icon on Facebook to a real person, and the friends and connections I have made over the years at PaleoFx have definitely made huge impacts and changes in my life. It’s just so fun, so come and enjoy it. I get so, I’m already really excited. {laughs}

Cassy Joy: it is, it’s really fun. You get to put faces with names, and I think that’s one of the neatest things. Everybody’s badge, for example, if you’re a blogger or you have a social media handle, I think they’re doing this again this year, but it says your real name, and then it has your handle. And it’s so funny because people walk around, and they kind of glaze over your name, and they’re like, oh, Fed and Fit. I know you!

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: And you just get to connect with people. You get to walk away with real friendships and real relationships.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: Last year, I mean, it’s just amazing the friendships you can walk away with. It’s a lot of fun, like you said. It’s birds of a feather, they all come together, and it’s incredible how much we want to support each other. At least in the blog world where I’m at. We’re all in our own corners of the web doing our own thing, but at the end of the day, I want my friends and my fellow bloggers to be so successful. You don’t really understand that sentiment until you’re able to look them in the eye, and be like, what can I do to support you because I think you’re amazing?

Charissa Talbot: Yep.

Cassy Joy: So you walk away with those kind of warm fuzzies. Anyway, I’m sorry. Off topic.

Charissa Talbot: No, no. We don’t need to apologize. It’s all on topic, this is what we’re talking about.

Cassy Joy: Yeah.

Charissa Talbot: So, let’s get into a little girl talk about PaleoFx.

Cassy Joy: Oh, yes!

Charissa Talbot: Can we talk a little fashion for a minute? Let’s do it.

Cassy Joy: For some reason, like Charissa said, we all, a bunch of the folks that go to this, we work from home and we wear a gym clothes, like she said, and it’s usually covered in dog or cat hair.

Charissa Talbot: Or pajamas.

Cassy Joy: {laughs} Or pajamas, whatever works. I like to dress up, but that’s just because it helps me stay focused. But anyway, for some reason I think it’s so fun, the little fashion girl in me love this. I see people posting on social media that they bought a new pair of shoes for PaleoFx. And it’s just turned into such a fun way to go parade around in your favorite garb.

Charissa Talbot: And everyone does fun nails.

Cassy Joy: Oh yeah, folks do fun nails. So when you go, don’t feel like you have to dress to the nines, that’s not at all what we’re saying. But just know that we’re going to go try to pretend like we’re real people that have real day jobs {laughs} and this is what we would normally wear, of course.

Charissa Talbot: This is what I wear; this is what I look like all the time.

Cassy Joy: {laughs} Exactly. So it’s kind of fun.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: Yeah, and Charissa has a fun little tip if you want to be extra sparkly, maybe.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah, at PaleoFx, like Cassy was saying, you get a lanyard with your name on it, and what I like to do. You know, you get I guess a necklace or something they give you to attach it to, but I think it’s kind of fun to buy your own ahead of time, like a personalized on, and wear that. That’s always fun. If you want to wear a funny T-shirt, that’s always fun. Or buttons, or stickers. You’ll see people, I think a bunch of people I heard were planning on wearing custom fanny packs. I don’t know; every little kind of group some groups will do T-shirts, whatever, its fun. It just makes it really fun, so you see a lot of interesting stuff going on there. I think last year there were a couple of girls that had a sign, and they did little video clips. I don’t know. Everyone has all these great creative ideas, and it’s just really fun.

Cassy Joy: It is fun.

Charissa Talbot: Fun time for sure.

Cassy Joy: I’m not usually that creative. I’m there probably just to hug people, talk to people, and try samples.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Charissa Talbot: I do a lot of hugs and if you know April of Peace Butterflies Paleo, her and I do a lot of dancing, as well. Very crazy.

Cassy Joy: Oooh.

5. What to see at PaleoFx [38:28]

Charissa Talbot: Oh yeah, we have a lot of fun. So let’s talk about the talks that we’re excited; I mean we’re really excited about, all of them sound amazing, but I think we’d like to shout out to a couple of them specifically.

Cassy Joy: Yeah, so if you’re going to be there, let’s say if you bought a one-day pass. And also know that I believe that the expo tickets are still on sale, and the stages that are in the expo hall are the cooking demon stage, I believe is in there, and I think there’s one, maybe 2 others plus all of the vendors are there, and that’s a really cool place to go and hang out, so don‘t think you’re missing out on the whole shebang if you’re only able to get an expo ticket. That’s where a lot of the action is at, so just keep that in mind.

Charissa Talbot: If you ask me, it’s where all the action is at.

Cassy Joy: {laughs} Yep, exactly. It’s a pretty fun place to be. But I just wanted to throw that out there before we jumped into the show, so if you have an expo ticket, I promise you’re still going to get the experience.

Charissa Talbot: Great time. So, Friday there’s what has been come to known as the Robb and Mark show, so that’s Robb Wolf and Mark Sisson, and it’s just pure fun. It’s pure, geeked out fun. So don’t want to miss that, I think that’s a big one. I can’t imagine anyone who’s not going to go to that one. It’s always fun.

Cassy Joy: It is a fun one, because you think about Robb and Mark Sisson, and you don’t think about the two of them being friends, necessarily, because they both run two different businesses, they kind of seem like they’re both on their own column of thought and methods. But two both enormous leaders in this industry, and it’s so fun to see that they’ve got a friendship, and they both maybe have slightly different ideas on certain things and they kind of talk about it, but at the end of the day, they’re both friends. So, anyways, it’s so fun to watch. I think that’s a great one.

Charissa Talbot: Very cool. I want to give a little shout out to our friend Tony Federico, who, if you like podcasts, he has a podcast for Paleo Magazine, which is a great podcast, and he also has his own book, his own website, and he writes for Paleo Magazine. He’s doing lots of stuff, but he’s doing a cooking demo on Friday and we just want to give a shout out to him. I’m excited about that.

So, I do have to give a special shout out to my girl Bo Duncan. She’s doing a cooking demo on Friday, and she’s my new landlord so I have to give her a shout out. {laughs}

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Charissa Talbot: So I’m very excited. I’m renting her garage apt from her. So very excited about that. And then my boss, Sarah Ballantyne, on Friday is making her bacon braised kale. You do not want to miss that cooking demo; delicious smell of bacon will be floating around the vendor floor at that time.

Cassy Joy: I argue that the smell of bacon, if you put a bacon stand opposite a Cinnabun, I feel like the bacon would draw more customers.

Charissa Talbot: The bacon would win, for sure.

Cassy Joy: It would, right?

Charissa Talbot: For sure.

Cassy Joy: Nothing smells better than bacon; even a Cinnabun! {laughs}

Charissa Talbot: Right. Totally agree.

Cassy Joy: Ok, continue. So Saturday.

Charissa Talbot: Do you want to tell us what we’ve got going on Saturday that we want to give some shout outs to?

Cassy Joy: Yeah. So Saturday morning, you can find yours truly on the cooking stage. I’m doing a demo, I believe it’s at 10:30 on Saturday morning, so you’ll have time to grab your Picnik coffee and head on in. I’ll be making my breakfast salad, and I’ll probably be talking about Gus, and do you think I can bring Gus? Would that be weird?

Charissa Talbot: Hmm, I don’t know if dogs are allowed on the vendor floor. If they are I’m bringing Pinto.

Cassy Joy: What if I put a jacket on him and made him dress up?

Charissa Talbot: {laughing}

Cassy Joy: He’d just love it. I’m kidding.

Charissa Talbot: Does he know; have you seen that dog that walks on his hind legs that has no front legs?

Cassy Joy: I have seen that! Gus is not that coordinated.

Charissa Talbot: Oh my gosh; I love that one.

Cassy Joy: But he probably admires those puppies that can do it.

Charissa Talbot: Yes, yes.

Cassy Joy: Yeah, so that will be fun. And my breakfast salad is one of my most popular recipes. I actually got a comment from somebody this morning on it. It’s on my blog so you can look at it right now; I have step wise photo instructions for it. But somebody commented this morning, I just love it. She owns a food prep business, so she makes meals and sells them to her customers, and she makes my breakfast salad, or a slight version of it. She says that it’s one of her customer’s favorite meals, they just love it. So, anyways. It’s definitely a favorite, you guys are going to love it.

Charissa Talbot: It’s amazing.

Cassy Joy: So there’s that. Charissa, what are some other ones?

Charissa Talbot: Hey, Paleo on the Go, and Pete’s Paleo, did you hear that? Maybe you guys should work with Cassy and provide her breakfast salad.

Cassy Joy: {laughs} Yeah, why not?

Charissa Talbot: Anyways. Yeah, why not?

Cassy Joy: All the recipes on my blog are available.

Charissa Talbot: Go ahead. So, my pal and friend Dean Dwyer, who I love, I met him at the first PaleoFx and we had such a great connection. He’s just an awesome guy. He’s doing his habits for successful weight loss, which I think is a topic that everyone can benefit from. And not even on the weight loss side, but he is all about habits, and how to stick with habits. I’m really excited about that. What else we got going on?

Cassy Joy: Well there’s the award show.

Charissa Talbot: The award show! So exciting.

Cassy Joy: Mm-hmm. It’s the first one so I don’t really know what to expect, but we were nominated.

Charissa Talbot: Cassy, should we write a speech in case?

Cassy Joy: {gasp}Oh my gosh, you know what, you guys, all of you who are reading Yes Please by Amy Poehler, you need to flip to the section where she talks about what it’s like to actually be on the award show. She’s like, she akins winning an award to wanting some pudding. She’s like, you don’t want to admit that you want the pudding. But you really want the pudding. And she talks about all these ways that you can creatively distract yourself from wanting the pudding, and the way that she did it, there are a couple of different scenarios over the years; Golden Globes, Academy Awards; I don’t know, I don’t really know the difference between all the award ceremonies, but whatever they were they were big. She talks about how they wrote acceptance speeches for each other, and they would read each other’s speeches, and just try to turn it into a funny thing.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: So nobody was worried about winning. Anyways; yes, long answer to your question, I totally think we should write an acceptance speech, and I think it should be some sort of a skit.

Charissa Talbot: I think so too; and even if we don’t win, maybe we’ll do the skit on the podcast anyways.

Cassy Joy: We should totally do it! Well, ok, then I guess I should scratch my initial skit idea of being mimes {laughs} because that wouldn’t really do very well on the podcast.

Charissa Talbot: {laughs} Wait, you want me to be quiet? I don’t know if that’s possible. {laughing}

Cassy Joy: You’re not quiet, you’re just not using your words.

Charissa Talbot: Oh, ok.

Cassy Joy: {laughing} There’s a difference.

Charissa Talbot: Body language. Well, ok. We can do that. I am not even going to make an appropriate joke. Ok, also I wanted to just give a shout out to my lovely friend, Diana Rodgers, who I love. She had a new book come out just this year, Homegrown Paleo, which is beautiful.

Cassy Joy: It is. We had her on the podcast, so scroll back to that, how to be Homegrown Paleo with Diana Rodgers.

Charissa Talbot: Yep. And Cassy, how are your little seedlings doing? Your plants?

Cassy Joy: They’re good. They’re busting out of their britches, but they’re good.

Charissa Talbot: Nice.

Cassy Joy: They’re ready for their forever home.

Charissa Talbot: This podcast has gotten way off track, but we’re having fun, so that’s all that matters.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Charissa Talbot: Ok, let’s move on to Sunday at PaleoFx. Just because it fits in kind of with my No Cook Paleo philosophy and I love, I’m such a huge fan of Stupid Easy Paleo, Stephanie, and I know Cassy is too.

Cassy Joy: Yep.

Charissa Talbot: She’s doing a talk with Melissa Joulwan on 20 ways to make paleo easier and more fun, which just sounds like a great talk. I’m very excited about that. And then my boss, Sarah Ballantyne, is going to ruffle some feathers with her talk, which is always exciting. I love ruffling feathers. She’s going to talk about the danger of ketogenic diets, so I’m pretty excited about that.

Cassy Joy: I think that’s going to be a great one to sit in on. I told Charissa this too; I get more questions about keto than anything else, and so I think this is going to be a really valuable talk.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah, I’m excited.

Cassy Joy: Because I think I agree with Sarah, already.

Charissa Talbot: Yep. Yep. It’s a good one. Ok, so for me, I mean, I love the talks, they’re great, but my sweet spot at PaleoFx is the vendor floor, because I love working a room. I love making new connections, and working on new marketing ideas with people, it’s just my jam. But I just wanted to give a quick shout out to some booths that you should visit. Our friends, first and foremost of the Granilla bar, they’re the sponsors of our podcast. Kevin and Denise are the loveliest people you will ever meet. Go stop by, give them a huge hug, and buy some bars. Love them.

Cassy Joy: Yep.

Charissa Talbot: Our pal Tony, Kasandrinos olive oil. We love him, stop by the booth. Go see him for sure. And then my pals over at One Stop Paleo Shop; again, that’s where you can buy your No Cook Paleo kits, and I happen to know they’re going to have something very special and fun at their booth that you’ll have to see in person.

Cassy Joy: Whoo.

Charissa Talbot: It’s going to be pretty amazing. I’m pretty excited about that.

Cassy Joy: What a teaser.

Charissa Talbot: I know! Well, you’re just going to have to see it. And everyone will start seeing it on Instagram probably on day 1. It’s, I’m so excited.

Cassy Joy: Is it a puppy?

Charissa Talbot: No, although that would be really cute.

Cassy Joy: Because I’m totally {laughs} Ok, continue. Sorry.

Charissa Talbot: Epic bar, of course, we love them, and the Dirt, because Cassy and I worked the Dirt booth together at the naturally fit games last year and we love them, so you can go brush your teeth after you eat all those samples.

Cassy Joy: Yeah, you brush your teeth, and then if she still does it, she’s got fresh squeezed orange juice that we helped squeeze once upon a time, and you can taste the orange juice and see how when you brush your teeth it doesn’t taste bad! Because normally when you brush your teeth and you drink orange juice or coffee, it tastes bad!

Charissa Talbot: Mm-hmm. It’s pretty amazing.

Cassy Joy: It’s one of my most; it really is amazing, so go check it out.

6. Places to eat in Austin [49:44]

Charissa Talbot: Alright Cassy, do you want to roll us into some top restaurants, or places to eat that people should check out while they’re in Austin?

Cassy Joy: Yeah, I’ll just fire through these. Some of our favorite places to eat in Austin; number one, Whole Foods, which Charissa hashtagged #Themothership, which is so true.

Charissa Talbot: Yep.

Cassy Joy: The Whole Foods in Austin, Texas, on 6th street; is it 6th? Off of 6th? It’s been a while.

Charissa Talbot: Yes.

Cassy Joy: It’s an experience in itself. It’s a destination, it’s something to be seen, and you will just love it. They have the largest prepared food section of any Whole Foods I’ve ever been to. It’s actually their headquarters; they have the offices upstairs. But it’s lovely, you’ll find it all there.

Picnik is our beloved food truck, favorite place to get a buttered coffee in Austin, Texas so make sure you look that up. It’s P-I-C-N-I-K. And make sure you say hi to Naomi and tell her that we sent you.

Charissa Talbot: Mm-hmm.

Cassy Joy: 24 Diner; notes here, it’s definitely been a PaleoFx conference favorite for years. I love the 24 Dinner, like the name implies, it’s open 24 hours so you can always go, and they have some really clean options. I always go thinking I’m going to try new things, but I still always get the sweet potato hash. It’s so stinking good.

Charissa Talbot: Yep. I do, I feel. Yeah, every time I’m like, oh I’m going! No, that’s what I’m getting. {laughs}

Cassy Joy: {laughs} It’s just so great. Odd Duck; it used to be a food truck, actually did you know that Charissa?

Charissa Talbot: I did not.

Cassy Joy: Yeah, it used to be a food truck. It’s one of those food truck success stories, which if you’ve seen the movie Chef, which we’ve talked about a couple of times, it kind of gives me warm fuzzies, but apparently Michelle Norris, who is one of the cofounders of PaleoFx, she celebrated her latest birthday there. It’s a great place.

Uchi or Uchiko, its sister restaurant.

Charissa Talbot: Yes! Both of them.

Cassy Joy: Wonderful restaurants. If you’re looking for an out of this world sushi experience, you need to go to Uchi or Uchiko. I forget which one is the pricier one; I think its Uchi.

Charissa Talbot: Yes.

Cassy Joy: But one of them, it’s kind of like you sit down and you order it tapas style. They leave the menu at your table, and you order bites as you go, and you keep ordering until you’re full, and it’s just an experience like no other. I’ve been in random spots; I was in Park City, Utah, once upon a time and I went to a sushi restaurant there, and they heard that we were from the San Antonio area, and they were like, oh have you ever been to Uchi in Austin? I was like, I have, why? They’re like everybody in the sushi business knows Uchi. Anyways.

Salty Sow, another one of my favorites. My girlfriends and I love Salty Sow. If you’re into cocktails, they’ve got some really yummy ones.

Charissa Talbot: Yep.

Cassy Joy: Oh, and apparently Jimmy Kimmel ate there recently; {laughs} he was in town for South by Southwest. And then last but not least, I threw Franklin’s Barbecue on the list. You need to go early, and prepare yourself to stand in line for …

Charissa Talbot: A long time.

Cassy Joy: A long time, like 3 plus hours.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: And there’s a cut off, because he runs out of food.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: So go bring your lawn chairs, your folding chairs, and some water or a mimosa, depending on how you like to wait.

Charissa Talbot: Yep.

Cassy Joy: And get prepared for some classic Texas barbecue.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah. Now, that being said, if you don’t have time to do the whole Franklin’s experience, there are a ton of food trucks around Austin that do great barbecue, so just ask some locals and you’ll get some great recommendations.

Cassy Joy: Absolutely.

Charissa Talbot: Last but not least, there are some great local companies in Austin that you could probably; I don’t know, I might be saying something I shouldn’t. But I think you could probably call and set up a tour if you are so inclined to, and if they have some time. But I’ve been on a couple of tours and it’s always fun. I don’t know if during PaleoFx time if they have time to, but it’s a possibility. So, a couple of the local companies here are Epic bar, of course, Live Soda, Barefoot Provisions just moved to Austin, Texas recently; I’m so excited. Bearded Brothers are another really clean bar that are great, and they’re local here. And then my friends over at Fringe Sport, which is always fun to kind of go see behind the scenes. They supply a lot of equipment to Crossfit boxes. So Peter Keller is the owner over there and he is just an amazing person. So really fun stuff.

Cassy Joy: Cool. Well, I think that about covers the full gamut on PaleoFx.

Charissa Talbot: We gave you a lot of information. A lot.

Cassy Joy: We did. And just so you know; Charissa and I have tossed around the idea of recording our next podcast live at PaleoFx, so if that’s something you’re interested in.

Charissa Talbot: We’ll see.

Cassy Joy: Yep. {laughs} If we can coordinate; like I said before this call, sometimes I feel like puppy in a room of squirrels.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: So if Charissa can get her thumb on me, we’ll definitely do that. But if you are in town for PaleoFx, please please, please come up and say hi.

Charissa Talbot: Yes!

Cassy Joy: Nothing makes me happier than saying hi to people. An I know it can feel a little awkward at first, walking up to somebody and say, hi, I know your blog. Or I listen to your podcast; it feels awkward, I’ve totally been there. But please do it, it makes my day.

Charissa Talbot: For sure.

Cassy Joy: And I’d love to get to know you; I’m sure Charissa feels the same.

Charissa Talbot: Yep.

Cassy Joy: I will try to be around the expo hall as much as possible. And.

Charissa Talbot: And.

Cassy Joy: Oh go ahead.

Charissa Talbot: No, go ahead.

Cassy Joy: I was going to say, if I don’t run into you, have a blast.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah. And, if you are in town and are a fan and would like to come check out, if you’re in town Thursday night and have some time, I’m hosting a pre-PaleoFx party. It’s the second annual Wine and Pork Bash. So if you come find me on Facebook and send me a message that we sent you over there from the podcast, I will add you to the invite list.

Cassy Joy: Cool.

Charissa Talbot: It’s going to be fun. It’s going to be a really fun party, so we’re excited about that.

Cassy Joy: Do we have time for a blooper reel real quick?

Charissa Talbot: Yeah, let’s do it!

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Charissa Talbot: It’s our podcast, we can do whatever we want. At this point, we’re already at an hour, so let’s do it.

Cassy Joy: Are we really at an hour?

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: Oh, goodness. If you are sticking it out…

Charissa Talbot: But that’s ok, because the people who are sticking it out are the people that are coming to PaleoFx; we told everyone else to sign off, so I feel like its ok.

Cassy Joy: {laughs} Ok good. Well, if you have stuck it out, shout out, holler.

Charissa Talbot: {laughing}

Cassy Joy: I just got a text message from Austin, my fiancé. He borrowed my truck to go and get more dirt to put it into our garden beds today.

Charissa Talbot: Uh-huh.

Cassy Joy: And he just texted me; I just found goat cheese in your car. {laughs} I said, eww really? He says, yes, an unopened package. I literally do not know when I bought goat cheese last.

Charissa Talbot: {laughing} Oh no!

Cassy Joy: {laughing} So. Gross. Double gross.

Charissa Talbot: Fun times.

Cassy Joy: Yep. Oh goodness. Oh my gosh, that really grosses me out. Anyways, that’s a day in the life of Cassy and Austin.

Charissa Talbot: Fun.

Cassy Joy: Well that’s all we got for today; do you have anything else, Charissa?

Charissa Talbot: No, I think we covered the gamut on that. Like I said, we’re going to try to do our next podcast from PaleoFx if we can, so we’re going to try. If not, we’ll figure out something. And then we’ll definitely also try to add a little PaleoFx recap, maybe on the end of one of our other upcoming podcasts for those of you that are interested on the aftershow.

Cassy Joy: Yeah, for sure. Oh and that reminds me, if you are there, my two lovely interns are attending PaleoFx this year.

Charissa Talbot: I’m so excited to meet them!

Cassy Joy: Oh, they’re great. I’m excited to meet them too! {laughs}

Charissa Talbot: {laughs}

Cassy Joy: We haven’t ever met in person, but we’ve been working together for a while.

Charissa Talbot: So exciting.

Cassy Joy: That’s just the nature of an online business. But if you do see them, I’m going to go ahead and give them a shout out real quick so you can go up and give them a warm welcome.

Charissa Talbot: Yes! Please do.

Cassy Joy: Kelly Nardo is going to be there, and she’s a lovely sharp as a tack girl, and I think she’s excited about a lot of talks. And another one of the interns, Megan Keener is going to be there, as well.

Charissa Talbot: Nice.

Cassy Joy: And she’s equally as lovely. She’s coming in from Utah, so I think it’s going to be so much fun. I’m excited for those girls. So if you see them, give them a warm welcome.

Charissa Talbot: Very excited.

Cassy Joy: And I’ve officially drug out everything as long as possible.

Charissa Talbot: {laughs} We did it!

Cassy Joy: We did it. Excited to see you all, if you are there, and excited for all the wonderful experiences you’re going to have, and if you did stick this out and you’re not attending PaleoFx, put it on your radar for a year to come.

Charissa Talbot: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: It’s definitely worth the trip. And in the very least, you can live stream all the wonderful talks, like Charissa said before, you can find that link in the show notes on FedandFit.com.

Charissa Talbot: Yep. Alright y’all.

Cassy Joy: Alrighty. Thank you again for joining us, and we’ll be back again next week. Bye-bye.
