Gluten Free Box Brownie Brands Compared

WE DID IT! Cassy asked you which brownie mixes you wanted us to test, we narrowed them down to the top 11, ordered them, baked them, …and ate them! We took notes on every single one and then ranked them. I hope this makes your brownie buying decision MUCH easier!

Below, you’ll find a list of the brownie mixes that we tested. Every single mix is gluten free, and several have even more allergy considerations than that (dairy-free, egg-free, etc).

Things to keep in mind: we baked every single batch of brownies in a parchment paper-lined nonstick 9-inch square baking pan. As far as add-ins go, we used avocado oil as the butter (or oil) addition in each recipe.

Gluten Free Boxed Brownies – The Winners

Now that we’ve gone over all of the details for each specific brownie mix, let’s talk about THE WINNERS!

boxes of mixed brownies on a marble surface

Best Overall

The clear overall winner in the Fed + Fit test kitchen was Krusteaz. These brownies had a great taste and texture, and the addition of chocolate chips was really nice.

Best Price

Finding an inexpensive gluten-free brownie mix proved to be pretty difficult. While most of the options here are pretty pricey, Krusteaz (our overall winner) actually ranked the best as far as price goes too, with each box coming in at right at $4. Next up were King Arthur’s mix ($4.29) and Namaste ($4.99). Keep in mind that we purchased the liveGfree (Aldi) brownies on Amazon, but if you have an Aldi near you (we don’t), I can guarantee that the price will be much lower than what’s listed here.

Best Taste

Krusteaz was the taste winner too!

Best Texture

As far as texture goes, several brownies were both chewy and gooey without having to be modified (ex. underbaked) at all:

Healthiest

The brownies made with the fewest ingredients are Namaste and Simple Mills; the Highkey brownies include a few more ingredients, but they’re considered keto, so if that’s an important health requirement to you, they may be the way to go!

Which brownie mix is best?

We preferred the Krusteaz brownie mix, but the Cup4Cup, and King Arthur mixes were also at the top of our list.

What brownie mix is gluten free?

All 11 of the mixes we tested are gluten free!

Where to buy gluten free brownie mix?

Every single mix on this list can be found on Amazon. Several of them can also be found in local grocery stores.

How to make box brownies better?

A lot of the mixes give the option of adding in chocolate chips or nuts, so if that’s your thing, you may try an addition like that to jazz up your boxed brownie mix. Otherwise, I say to always stick to the lowest cooking time in a given range and go up from there (if needed); this will help your brownies to be as gooey as possible!

Can you freeze gluten free brownies?

You can! Wrap individually (already-cooked) brownies in parchment paper, then stick them in a bag or airtight container, and pop them in the freezer. When you’d like to enjoy a brownie, pull one out, and heat it in the microwave until warmed through!

  1. I recommend trying Open Nature GF products, their brownies are really tasty and not grainy like a lot of products out there.

  2. The best mix I found was Brooklyn Blackout brownie (GF) I bought it at Stop & Shop. Cannot find it anywhere now. Do you know anything about this one? I found some I made in my freezer. Nothing compares TIA

    1. We haven’t heard of this brand, but we’ll definitely keep an eye out for it. Thanks for putting it on our radar!

  3. Aldi has the Live G Free brand of brownie mix. It’s affordable, delicious, simple to make and by far the best one I’ve ever tried. And I’ve tried quite a few.

    1. We haven’t tried that one out yet! Thank you for sharing that suggestion. -Melissa

  4. Trader Joe’s also has a fantastic GF brownie mix with LOTS of chocolate chips! I’ve done them both cooked normal time to have a chewy brownie and undercooked to have a gooey brownie. Good crinkle on top and never any issues with the edges burning.

  5. Thanks for this article. I’ve tried several except the Krusteez. However, I have tried other Krusteez Gluten-Free-Free boxed items with high success on both flavor and texture. Their honey cornbread mix is the only gf mix, I have been able to duplicate the texture and tast to my adapted Jiffy cornbread mix. (Ie: 1 more egg, less milk give a full-on cirn flavor with a dense moist texture that doesn’t crumble or taste grained. Off to purchase a box of Krusteez gf brownie mix.

  6. Thanks for testing these, such a great kitchen experiment! I’ll definitely try the winning brand now

  7. I love Aldi prices! We have one 2 miles away. Brownie mix is only $2.29 a box!!

    1. Yes, it’s definitely much less expensive in-store! Unfortunately, we could only link to the Amazon option!

  8. I was so excited to see your results when you announced this “challenge”. I love the Krusteaz as well, and they are so much more affordable than many gluten free brands. Thank you for what you do, this was one of my favorite blog posts!

    1. Agreed! They were so delicious! I’m so glad you found this post helpful, Bex!
