Cadillac Margarita Recipe

It’s no secret that we love a good margarita around here, so naturally, we wanted to have a Cadillac margarita on file for those super special occasions that deserve a trip to the top shelf. With top-of-the-line ingredients and fresh lime juice shaken until chilled and then served neat with a classic, flaky sea salt rim, this recipe is equal parts delicious and luxurious.

The Cadillac Margarita is believed to have originated at the legendary Cadillac Bar in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. Wolfgang Puck was one of the first chefs to present a premium margarita at his restaurant, Spago, in Los Angeles, thus setting the trend for luxury margs. This elite beverage is made with top-shelf ingredients, such as Grand Marnier and reposado tequila.

A margarita, by definition, is a cocktail made with tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice. A Cadillac margarita is the most premium variation of the cocktail that uses top-shelf liquor (including Grand Marnier and reposado tequila).

Cadillac is a luxury brand of cars, and the Cadillac margarita is aptly coined as the luxury version of margaritas. 

Ingredients for Cadillac Margarita

To make 2 servings, you’ll need:

  • ½ cup of reposado tequila 
  • ¼ cup of Grand Marnier
  • ¼ cup of lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon of agave

Ingredient Modifications

  • Use any premium tequila. We chose Camarena Reposado Tequila for this recipe, but you can substitute it for any premium tequila of your choice!
  • Make a mocktail version. To enjoy this Cadillac Margarita as a mocktail, try a non-alcoholic tequila spirit with Pure Grand Marnier Extract, fresh lime juice, and agave.

How to Make a Cadillac Margarita 

Here’s how to make your Cadillac Margarita (served neat):

  1. Add ingredients and shake. Add all of the ingredients to a shaker and fill with ice. Shake the shaker until your ingredients are chilled. *If you’re making a pitcher, add all of your ingredients to a mason jar or pitcher and stir to combine. Then chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours.
  2. Salt the rim. Using a lime wedge or some of the margarita mixture, line the edge of your margarita glass, then dip in a shallow saucer with flaky sea salt to salt the rim.   3. Pour and enjoy! Pour the margarita directly into the glass, garnish with a slice of lime, cheers, and enjoy!

Pro-tip: To keep your Cadillac Margarita extra cool, chill your margarita glasses before salting the rim and pouring your drink. 

Cadillac Margarita Pitcher Recipe

To make a pitcher, you’ll need:

  • 2 cups reposado tequila
  • 1 cup Grand Marnier
  • 1 cup lime juice
  • ¼ cup agave

You can scale up or down using the following ratio for your margarita:

  • 2 parts tequila
  • 1 part Grand Marnier
  • 1 part lime juice
  • ¼ agave (more of less for sweetness)
