This homemade hamburger helper is everything you remember about the classic dish – but made even better with fresh, homemade ingredients!

2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 yellow onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 1/2 pounds ground beef (85/15 or 90/10 are both great options) 2 tablespoons tomato paste 1 teaspoon paprika 1 teaspoon garlic powder 1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 12 ounceselbow macaroni (we used this one for gluten-free) 3 1/2 cups beef broth 3 cups milk 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
Add the olive oil to a large skillet or pot over medium heat. Once hot, add the onion and garlic and cook for 4-5 minutes until the onion is translucent.
Add the ground beef to the pot with the onion and garlic and cook for about 8 minutes, crumbling as you cook, until browned.
Drain the excess fat from the beef, then add the tomato paste, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to the beef and stir to combine.
Add the broth and milk to the pot and increase the heat to high. Once the mixture comes to a boil, add the pasta to the pot, then reduce the heat slightly to medium-high to maintain a low boil. Cook for 12 minutes, until most of the liquid has been absorbed and the pasta has softened.
Turn off the heat, then stir in the cheese and serve immediately.
