Today, we’re bringing you 10 each of movies, TV shows, podcasts, books, and music for the days that you need a quick escape to a different world! Books are my favorite way to escape – there’s nothing like getting lost in Hogwarts (Harry Potter, anyone?!) during a stressful season of life. We’re confident that these shows, movies, podcasts, books, and songs will provide some relief from your hectic day-to-day.

Books to Get Lost In

Escape to a different world with a book! There’s nothing quite like cozying up with a good book, and if you’re more of an audiobook listener, consider downloading Libro.fm and getting 3 books for the price of 1, plus support your local bookstore with code: FEDANDFIT.

  • Oona Out of Order by Margarita Montimore – On her 19th birthday, Oona begins time-traveling each year and experiences the rest of her life out of order. It is completely addicting, full of life lessons, and really emphasizes the role of fate and family.
  • Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid – With empathy and piercing social commentary, Such a Fun Age explores the stickiness of transactional relationships, what it means to make someone “family,” and the complicated reality of being a grown-up.
  • The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid – Taylor Jenkins Reid is a master at re-creating past eras. In this book, you’re transported back to the days of old Hollywood to follow aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo, who is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life.
  • Eight Hundred Grapes by Laura Dave – Eight Hundred Grapes is a story about the messy realities of family, the strength (and weaknesses) of romantic love, and the importance of finding a place to call home.
  • City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert – City of Girls is a unique love story that takes place in the New York City theater world in the 1940s and follows protagonist Vivian as she tells her life story.
  • Things You Save in a Fire by Katherine Center – Cassie Hanwell is a shining star as the only female firefighter in her Texas firehouse, but when she has to make the move to Boston to care for her ailing mother, she isn’t exactly welcomed by the old-school Boston fire crew. The Things You Save in a Fire is a heartfelt book about vulnerability, forgiveness, and courage.
  • Matchmaking for Beginners by Maddie Dawson – Marnie MacGraw wants an ordinary life—a husband, kids, and a minivan in the suburbs. Now that she’s marrying the man of her dreams, she’s sure this is the life she’ll get. Then Marnie meets Blix Holliday, her fiancé’s matchmaking great-aunt, and everything changes—just as Blix told her it would.
  • My (not so) Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella – Katie’s life is a daily struggle, so she finds herself taking refuge in not-quite-true Instagram posts. Then, just as she’s finding her feet and a possible new romance, she gets fired and has to retreat to her family farm. Secrets are spilled and relationships rejiggered, and Katie must question her own assumptions about what makes for a truly meaningful life.
  • The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman – It’s time for Nina to come out of her comfortable shell, but she isn’t convinced real life could ever live up to fiction. It’s going to take a brand-new family, a persistent suitor, and the combined effects of ice cream and trivia to make her turn her own fresh page.
  • On the Bright Side by Melanie Shankle & Jen Hatmaker – These days, so many voices tell us what to do, what to think, and what kind of parent or friend or spouse to be that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and defeated. Somewhere in the midst of online arguments and crazy politics and the ups and downs of life, we’ve lost sight of the gifts that are all around us: kindness, love, mercy, and joy.

They help each other out, make incredible bakes, and keep it drama-free. It’s a sweet and refreshing take on reality competitions!
  • Jane the Virgin (Netflix) – In this telenovela adaptation, a young, devout Catholic woman discovers that she was accidentally artificially inseminated. Despite the out-there premise, this fun series is truly about love and the importance of family. It is funny, full of heart, and has plenty of twists and turns that will keep you glued to your television.
  • Grace and Frankie  – Finding out that their husbands are not just work partners but have also been romantically involved for the last twenty years, two women with an already strained relationship try to cope with the circumstances together. Great beat= “Everything Means Nothing If I Can’t Have You” by Shawn Mendes
