Whether you’re serving it at a party or sipping on it with your bestie on a regular ole Friday night, this pomegranate margarita is such a fun twist on the classic citrus & tequila cocktail. While several traditional margarita ingredients make an appearance here (looking at you, tequila, lime, and Grand Marnier!), the use of pomegranate juice (plus a few special garnishes) gives this margarita variation a really fun spin.

We’ve got quite the margarita catalog, y’all. So if you’re looking for variations galore, we’ve got you. Try the peach margarita or mango margarita as your next summertime sip, the apple cider margarita or cranberry margarita as you head into fall, and these slightly sweet, tangy, festive pomegranate margaritas for all of your holiday gathering needs.

Health Benefits of Pomegranate

So this margarita recipe is loaded with pomegranate juice – what’s the big deal? Pomegranates (and by default, pomegranate juice), are really good for you! They’re loaded with…

  • Antioxidants
  • Vitamins C, E, and K
  • Folate
  • Potassium

Aside from all of that, pomegranates are also super anti-inflammatory, can help remove free radicals, protect cells from damage, and have even been shown to aid in lowering blood pressure, fighting heart disease, and decreasing insulin resistance (resulting in lower blood sugar for those with diabetes).

Ingredients Needed

The ingredient amounts below will make two margaritas. If you’re looking for more than that, find adjusted ingredient amounts in the recipe card. Here’s everything you’ll need:

all of the ingredients for a pomegranate margarita in bowls on a marble surface
  • Pomegranate Juice – to start, you’ll need a ½ cup of pomegranate juice.
  • Tequila – it wouldn’t be a margarita without a little bit of tequila! You’ll need a ½ cup here.
  • Grand Marnier – a ¼ cup of Grand Marnier adds a hint of orange citrus + vanilla to the cocktail.
  • Lime Juice – to keep the recipe as true to a classic margarita as possible, you’ll also add a ¼ cup of fresh (this is key!) lime juice to the mix.
  • Agave Nectar – though completely optional, 2 teaspoons of agave nectar sweeten the margarita just a bit.
  • Pomegranate Arils – add a scoop of pomegranate arils to each glass as garnish if you wish!
  • Twist of Orange Peel – if you want to go all out, add a twist of orange peel to each glass too!

What is the best tequila to use in a pomegranate margarita?

Good question! My personal preference for a cocktail tequila (as opposed to one that you’d sip on straight) is a high. quality blanco (or silver) tequila because it lends a milder flavor and tends to be one of the more affordable options as far as tequila goes!

How to Make a Pomegranate Margarita

The process is really straightforward and easy. Here’s what you’ll do:

  1. Mix – add the pomegranate juice, tequila, Grand Marnier, lime juice, and agave (if using) to a pitcher or jar (depending on how many margaritas you’re making). Mix everything together and taste for sweetness, adding more agave if needed.
  2. Dress the glasses – rub the lime wedge over the rim of each glass, roll in the brown sugar, and tap off the excess.
  3. Pour, garnish, and serve – fill each glass with ice and pour in the margarita. Garnish with the optional pomegranate arils and orange twists, serve, and enjoy!

Pomegranate Margarita Variations

Though this margarita is delicious and absolutely worth trying as written, changing it up and doing some cocktail experimenting can be really fun too. Here are a few ideas:

Skinny Pomegranate Margarita

This margarita (and all of the FF cocktails) are made with just a few simple ingredients, so there isn’t a whole lot of swapping or cutting needed to make this a more health-conscious option. I’d absolutely start by cutting the agave nectar (it’ll still be really delicious, I promise!) + the brown sugar rim.

Frozen Pomegranate Margarita

Here’s what I’d recommend doing if you’d like to make a frozen pomegranate margarita:

  1. Mix, pour, and freeze everything but the tequila – mix together the pomegranate juice, Grand Marnier, lime juice, and agave, and then pour the mixture into silicone ice cube trays (THESE large ones work great for this), and freeze.
  2. Blend – once the pomegranate juice mixture is completely frozen in the ice cube trays, pop the cubes out, and add them to your blender with the tequila. Blend until smooth!
  3. Pour, garnish, and serve – pour the frozen pomegranate margaritas into glasses, garnish as desired, and serve!

Pomegranate Margarita Pitcher Recipe

Sometimes two margaritas just aren’t enough, and when that’s the case, make a pitcher! Find adjusted ingredient amounts below:

  • 4 cups pomegranate juice
  • 4 cups of tequila
  • 2 cups Grand Marnier
  • 2 cups fresh lime juice
  • ¼ cup plus 1 tablespoon agave nectar (optional, for a sweeter margarita)
  • Pomegranate arils, for garnish (optional)
  • Twists of orange peel, for garnish (optional)

Pomegranate Margarita Garnish

Serve your margarita with pomegranate arils and twists of orange peel as garnishes (that’s what we did!), with a sugar or salt rim, or all on its own in a glass. It’ll be really delicious either way!

Making Ahead and Storing

Pomegranate margaritas can absolutely be made ahead of time! To do this, mix all of the margarita ingredients together in a jar, screw the lid on, and store in the fridge until you’re ready to serve. When it’s margarita time, simply dress the glasses, pour, garnish, and enjoy!

Store any leftover margarita you have in a lidded jar in the fridge. Stored this way, they’ll keep for up to 4 days.

    1. Any other orange liqueur (like Triple Sec or Cointreau) will work, Claire!
