We are face mask fanatics over here! They are such a simple way to add a little bit of pizazz to your skincare routine while giving your skin a big, nourishing hug. We’ve created several homemade masks for you (an Antioxidant Turmeric and Yogurt mask, a DIY Clarifying Peel Off Face Mask, and a DIY Pumpkin Mask), and this Soothing Oatmeal and Avocado Mask rounds out the bunch!

Why You Should Make Homemade Face Masks

First, let’s chat homemade face masks. Why should you include homemade face masks in your skincare routine? Here are a few of our favorite reasons…homemade face masks are:

  1. Budget-Friendly – making your own face mask is super friendly on the budget! If you mask once per week and rotate between homemade and store-bought masks, your store-bought masks will last you twice as long, saving you quite a bit of money!

  2. Super Easy – making face masks at home is *super* easy! Though it may sound intimidating, making your own face mask is really just a mash and mix situation.

  3. Made with Accessible Ingredients – another reason that making our own masks is a no brainer is that the ingredients are super accessible – no scouring the web for obscure, mysterious, never-heard-of-that ingredients. We’ll use incredibly beneficial ingredients that you’ll likely find stocked in your kitchen right now!

  4. A Great Way to Switch Things Up – switching things up can work wonders for your skin! While we all have our basic set of go-to skincare products (that we likely use on a daily basis), adding in a few new, beneficial ingredients in the form of a homemade face mask is a great idea.

Avocado Face Mask Benefits

Avocados are known (and loved) for their healthy fats, and those same healthy fats and oils make them a really great addition to your skincare routine. The healthy fatty acids in avocados penetrate the skin to soften, hydrate, and nourish the face, as well as diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The antioxidants found in avocados help to remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and exfoliate the skin.

Why oatmeal? Glad you asked! Oatmeal actually soaks up excess oils on your skin, helps to treat acne, and its dense antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties help to combat dry skin (and aid in the itching that often comes with it) and remove dead skin cells. Oats also contain natural cleansers (called saponins) that are incredibly effective at removing dirt and oil from the skin. Oatmeal is also gentle (while still being effective) enough to suit all skin types.

Isn’t it amazing what real food can do for our skin?! I oftentimes forget how powerful combatting common skin problems in a natural way is!

Homemade Oatmeal Avocado Face Mask Recipe

This simple recipe is a cinch to make! From grabbing the few simple ingredients to making your face mask to applying it and reaping the benefits, the process could not be easier!

Here’s What You Need:

  • Ripe Avocado – know that you know the benefits of avocado (hello, essential fatty acids!), you can see why we included mashed avocado in this soothing mask! You’ll need 1/2 of an avocado here. Be sure to grab a soft, ripe avocado to make mashing easy!

  • Oats – oats aren’t just for healthy eating! For this mask recipe, you’ll need 2 tablespoons of rolled oats. For a smoother application, you can grind up the oats before mixing with the avocado.

  • Olive Oil – 1 tablespoon of olive oil adds another dose of healthy, soothing fats.

  • CBD Oil – While this is completely optional, a teaspoon of CBD oil (this one is our favorite!) is packed with soothing, anti-inflammatory benefits and works wonders for stressed out, sensitive skin.

How To Make An Avocado Face Mask

To make this soothing mask, you’ll need to first mash up the avocado. Once it’s totally mashed, add in the rest of the ingredients and mix! Easy, right?!

How to Apply Avocado Face Mask

Here’s how this facial mask will go from sitting in the jar/bowl to soothing and nourishing your skin:

  1. Wash and Dry Your Face – before applying any face mask, you’ll need to wash and dry your face just like you normally would.

  2. Apply the Face Mask – after your face is clean and dry, using a flat brush or your fingers, apply a good layer of the avocado and oatmeal mask to your face.

  3. Wait! – set a timer for 10-20 minutes, then either get in a little bit of “me” time (that’s what self-care is all about, right?!) or complete a task from your to-do list until your timer goes off.

  4. Rinse Face – when your timer goes off, rinse off the mask with lukewarm water and a soft towel (these soft muslin cloths are our favorites!) until it is completely removed, and then pat your face dry.

  5. Apply the Rest of Your Skincare Routine – once your mask is removed and your face is completely dry, apply the remainder of your normal skincare routine!

How long are homemade face masks good for?

Since this soothing oatmeal + avo mask is homemade, it definitely won’t last as long as a store-bought mask. We recommend storing it in an airtight container or jar (these are perfect!) in the fridge for 5-7 days.
