Weโre walking you through how to steam broccoli three different ways (microwave, stovetop, and Instant Pot) for the quickest, easiest green veggie side!
Steamed Broccoli Recipe
Steamed broccoli is the easiest green veggie side to throw together on a busy weeknight (or just any ole night that you want to add another veggie to your plate!). This steamed broccoli recipe includes instructions for the stovetop, microwave, and Instant Pot — so pick your method and get going!
Steamed Broccoli Ingredients
The only ingredient youโll need here (besides water, of course) is fresh broccoli! Youโll need 1 large head (or 4-5 cups of florets).
How do you add flavor to broccoli?
Steamed broccoli is pretty plain and simple, yโall, but if youโre looking to jazz it up, a squeeze of lemon and a sprinkle of flaky sea salt just before serving will do the trick!
How to Steam Broccoli
There are 3 different ways to go about steaming your broccoli: the stovetop, microwave, and Instant Pot. Pick your favorite and go for it!
How to Steam Broccoli on the Stovetop
- Add water and boil – add 1 inch of water to a medium-to-large pot and bring to boil over high heat.
- Add broccoli – add the steamer insert, then put the broccoli in the insert.
- Cook – steam for 6-8 minutes, until bright green and easily pierced with a fork.
How to Steam Broccoli in the Microwave
- Add broccoli – place the broccoli in a microwave-safe bowl with a ยฝ cup of water.
- Cover with plastic wrap – cover the bowl with plastic wrap, or a plate that fits over the bowl.
- Cook – steam for 3 ยฝ (al dente) to 5 (baby-friendly texture) minutes, until the broccoli is bright green and tender.
How to Steam Broccoli in the Instant Pot
- Add water – add ยพ cup of water to the Instant Pot, then place a steamer insert in the pot.
- Add broccoli – put the broccoli in the steamer.
- Seal, cook, and release – seal the pot, then set to cook for 0 minutes on high pressure. As soon as the timer goes off, release the pressure and remove the lid.
How to Steam Broccoli without a Steamer
If youโre looking for a method that requires NO steamer basket, microwaving your broccoli is your best bet. This method only requires a large microwave-safe bowl and plastic wrap.
How Long to Steam Broccoli
Regardless of method, steaming broccoli should take no longer than 10 minutes. The quickest method is definitely the microwave method, but truly, all 3 methods are super quick and easy.
What is the best way to steam broccoli?
The best way to steam broccoli is going to vary from person to person. I personally prefer to microwave my broccoli (the entire process — from steaming to clean-up — is just too simple for me to pass up), but if you donโt feel great about using the microwave (or you donโt have one), that method wonโt be the best for you!
How healthy is steamed broccoli?
Steamed broccoli is super nutritious! Most studies actually show it to be the most nutritious form of this green veggie.
Is steamed broccoli better than raw?
Taste-wise, I think so! Iโm actually not a fan of raw broccoli at all, but really enjoy steamed (and roasted) broccoli. Nutrient-wise, studies actually point to steamed broccoli being more nutritious than raw…SCORE!
