NINE ways takes the viral TikTok recipe to a whole new level of delicious! Perfectly creamy, balanced, and healthy yogurt toast – trust me, you need this in your life.

Yogurt Toast Recipe

Beautiful videos of this new trend yogurt toast are everywhere, and we are happily jumping in toast first to take it on! It feels very reminiscent of custard-style French toast, only you spoon the custard into a well in the center of the bread as opposed to soaking the bread in the mixture. After testing different recipes and combinations, we can confidently say we cracked the code for the PERFECT yogurt toast. Not too eggy, rich and creamy, and balanced in every way. The secret? Using an egg yolk as opposed to a full egg. Y’all, the results are epic. We’re bringing to you yogurt toast two ways, sweet and savory, with nine different toppings, and four amazing bread options, including (as always) gluten-free!

Yogurt toast is a viral TikTok recipe that is taking over the internet, so of course we wanted the opportunity to jump on board! The attention grabbing proclamation–”like dessert for breakky but healthy.” Count us in! The original recipe is a custard-style toast made with a Greek yogurt, egg, and vanilla extract topped with berries and baked in an air fryer.

Yogurt Toast Ingredients

This recipe keeps the ingredients super simple (with staples you likely already have in your pantry), but still takes it to the next level. Here’s what you’ll need to make a sweet and savory base:

Top down view of yogurt toast ingredients with white, cursive letters labeling the ingredients.
  • Bread – regardless of whether you choose the sweet or savory route, you’ll need bread! We used Canyon Bakehouse Gluten Free bread. Croissants, sourdough, and brioche are also great options. Depending on the size of your bread, you’ll need 2-6 pieces.

For the Sweet Base

  • Greek Yogurt – what would yogurt toast be without yogurt?! You’ll use ½ a cup of unsweetened, full-fat Greek yogurt.
  • Egg Yolk – to keep the base smooth and creamy, you’ll use 1 egg yolk.
  • Maple Syrup – 1 tablespoon of maple syrup provides just the right amount of sweetness to the base.
  • Vanilla Extract – 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract enhances the vanilla and caramel flavor from the maple syrup.
  • Lemon Zest – optional, but highly recommended, is the zest of one lemon. The citrus takes the flavors of the base ingredients and toppings to a whole new level.

For the Savory Base

  • Greek Yogurt – you’ll start with ½ cup of unsweetened, full-fat Greek yogurt.
  • Egg Yolk – the yolk from one egg provides the perfect amount of creamy, richness.
  • Garlic Powder – 1 teaspoon of garlic powder gives a subtle punch of flavor that really kicks things up for the savory breakfast lovers.

Yogurt Toast Toppings

The toppings are such a fun opportunity to let your creative juices soar! Here are 9 ways to top your toast, but remember, the sky’s the limit!

To the Sweet Base

  • Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip – top with a drizzle of peanut butter and sprinkle of dark chocolate chips, bake, and then dust with powdered sugar. You’ll truly feel like you’re having dessert for breakfast!
  • Blackberry Jam and Thyme – bake your custard on the bread (without toppings), then once removed from the air fryer or oven, top with a spoonful of blackberry jam and sprinkle of fresh thyme. This flavor combo is the perfect marriage of herbs and berries!
  • Bruleed Banana – top with sliced banana, bake, then top with white sugar and (this is the really fun part) caramelize the sugar with a blow torch. Now, I know that a blow torch is not a commonly found kitchen tool, so if you don’t have one lying around, you can also add a drizzle of honey over the banana before baking, and it is equally as delicious.
  • Pomegranate Fig – top with sliced fig and pomegranate seeds and bake. This crimson and purple beauty is sure to impress!
  • Peach, Mint, and Lime – top with sliced or diced peaches, bake, then add a chiffonade of mint and pinch of lime zest. This combo makes for the freshest flavors!
  • Maple Bacon – top with a drizzle of maple syrup and crumbled bacon and bake. A truly classic flavor combo in a whole new way!
  • Raspberry Lemon – top with raspberries, bake, then add a pinch of lemon zest to garnish. My take on the classic recipe with added brightness and perfectly baked raspberries with a beautiful, jammy texture.

To the Savory Base

  • Ham, Cheese, and Scallion – top with chopped ham and shredded cheese, bake, then garnish with a sprinkle of scallions. Fed + Fit team member Graysen says, “I could seriously eat this every day for breakfast.”
  • Soft-Boiled Egg, Capers, and Dill – bake your savory custard on the bread (without toppings), then once removed from the air fryer or oven, top with a soft-boiled egg (find our guide on making a perfectly jammy egg here), capers, drizzle of olive oil, fresh dill, and some flaky sea salt. If I had to pick a favorite, this one is it!

Ingredient Modifications

  • Use a different bread – I made this recipe on gluten free bread, but brioche, sourdough, and croissant (this was the most epic in my opinion) are all really delicious options! You can really go with whatever your bread preference!
  • Make it dairy free – sub the Greek yogurt for a non-dairy yogurt option. I found that coconut yogurt was the best option and kept the custard thick and creamy.
  • Add seasoning – play with the base flavors by adding other dry seasoning. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and cocoa would be great additions to the sweet base, while you could really spice things up with the savory base (think paprika, turmeric, onion powder, and/or cayenne).

How to Make Yogurt Toast

The process is SO simple and quick. Here’s what you’ll do to make your custard toast:

Custard ingredients in a black and white speckled bowl.
Spoon pressing down on a slice of bread sitting on a wooden cutting board with 4 other pieces of bread.
Custard ingredients blended in a black and white speckled bowl.
Hand holding spoonful of custard adding it to slice of bread on a wooden cutting board with 4 other slices of bread.
  1. Preheat – preheat your oven or air fryer to 350℉. If you’re baking in the oven, you’ll also want to prep a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper.
  2. Make the base – add your sweet or savory ingredients to a bowl and whisk until smooth to combine.
  3. Prep the bread – using a spoon, press down the center of the bread to make a well for the custard base.
  4. Add the filling – to each piece of bread, add a couple spoonfuls of yogurt filling (you may use more for a larger piece of bread) and your toppings.
  5. Bake – if you’re using an air fryer, add your toast to the basket and bake for 5 minutes (6 minutes if you have a thicker layer of toppings like the ham and cheese). If you’re using the oven, place your toast on your parchment lined baking sheet and bake for 12 minutes.
  6. Garnish – garnish your toast with any additional ingredients.
  7. Serve and enjoy – this yogurt toast is really best served warm when the bread is crisp and the filling is warm and creamy.

These decadent and dreamy toasts are actually really balanced! You’re getting a combination of healthy fats and protein from the yogurt and egg yolk all carried by the bread, making this a great breakfast option to start your day!
