Sour Cream and Onion Dip Ingredients
You’ll need a handful of ingredients for this recipe, all super simple and easily accessible. If you plan on making this dip often, I recommend buying some of the seasoning in bulk so that you’ve got it on hand when you need it! Find ingredient notes (including substitutions and swaps) below.
- Greek yogurt – the addition of Greek yogurt in this recipe gives it an extra punch of protein. We used full-fat Greek yogurt, but any plain Greek yogurt you like will work great.
- Dehydrated onion – different than onion powder, the dehydrated onion (oftentimes called minced onion) gives the dip it’s classic texture. You can find minced onion in the spice aisle of the grocery store, likely close to the onion and garlic powder.
A full ingredient list with exact amounts can be found in the recipe card below.
Recipe Variations and Modifications
- Make it dairy-free – this recipe has a very dairy-heavy base, so making it dairy-free calls for a few major substitutions. If you can find dairy-free yogurt and sour cream (both exist, but may be tricky to find), those will work perfectly. If you can find ONE of those (either dairy-free yogurt or dairy-free sour cream) but not the other, you can use an equal amount of mayonnaise in place of the component you can’t find.
- Make it gluten-free – this recipe is 100% gluten-free as-is. Another perk of going homemade!
How to Make Sour Cream and Onion Dip
As mentioned above, this sour cream and onion dip is INCREDIBLY easy to make. Follow along below for the full, super easy how-to.
Step 1: Add the sour cream, yogurt, Dijon mustard, dehydrated onion, onion powder, garlic powder, and salt to a bowl.
Step 2: Mix the ingredients together until well combined.
Step 3: Let the sour cream and onion dip rest in the refrigerator for 30 minutes.
Step 4: Garnish with chives, serve with chips, and enjoy!
Recipe Tips
- Mix the dip really well to break up any seasoning clumps!
- Refrigerate the dip for about 30 minutes ahead of serving to allow the flavors to combine, the dehydrated onion to soften, and the dip to firm up a bit.
How to Serve
Serve your sour cream and onion dip alongside potato chips and/or fresh, crunchy veggies. Be prepared for the bowl to be, essentially, licked clean before the night is over!
How to Store
If you have leftovers (heavy on the if here), simply store the dip covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You may need to stir the dip to reincorporate it before digging in!
Frequently Asked Questions
Classic potato chips work great here. We love these Boulder Canyon chips cooked in avocado oil.
This dip can definitely be made 1-2 days in advance! Just wait to add the chive garnish until you’re ready to serve so that you can give the dip a quick stir when it comes out of the fridge.
Fresh, crunchy veggies and pretzels would also make for delicious dippers, and this dip is also REALLY yummy as a spread on burgers or sandwiches.
