Crayon Hearts

Crayon hearts! Arenโ€™t these the cutest?! These cute waxy hearts are so perfect for making with your little(s) for them to bring to their classroom in lieu of the traditional Valentineโ€™s Day cards. I absolutely love this craft (both the ease of pulling it together and the super cute finished product that can be so easily gifted) and hope you do too!

This craft is brought to you in *very* proud partnership with our very favorite safer cleaning company, Branch Basics. Get crafty with your favorite kiddos and then let them in on the safer clean-up!

Ingredients Needed for Colorful Crayon Hearts

The ingredients/supplies here are incredibly simple. Hereโ€™s everything youโ€™ll need:

  • Silicone Mold – to start, youโ€™ll want to grab heart silicone molds โ€“ these can be as large or as small as youโ€™d like!
  • Crayons – because we wanted these to be ultra Valentineโ€™s Day-esque, we opted for just red, pink, silver, and gold crayons. You can absolutely use ANY crayons you have on hand though (this is such a great way to repurpose old, worn-out crayons that are hanging out in your kiddoโ€™s art stash).

How to Make Crayon Hearts at Home

The process is super easy, making the craft itself all the more doable. Hereโ€™s the full how-to:

  1. Preheat the oven to 250ยฐF.
  2. Peel the paper off of the crayons – to start, youโ€™ll need to peel the paper off of your crayons. This is a great time for your kiddos to step in and help!
  3. Break the crayons – once the paper is peeled, go ahead and break the crayons into smaller pieces (exactly how small will depend on the size of your heart molds).
  4. Fill the molds – fill each mold with the broken crayons, being intentional to include some of each color in each of the molds.
  5. Melt – place the silicone molds on a baking sheet (this will help them to be much sturdier and easier to handle!) and pop them in the oven for 15 minutes.
  6. Check and add time if needed – after 15 minutes, check to see if the crayons are totally melted. If they arenโ€™t, add 5 more minutes. If they are, pull them out of the oven.
  7. Let cool – once the molds are out of the oven, let them cool completely. If youโ€™re looking to speed up this process, stick the molds (with the sheet pan still under them as support) in the freezer.
  8. Pop them out once totally cooled and hardened, pop the hearts out of their molds! Give them as Valentineโ€™s Day gifts or keep them at home for a fun spin on traditional crayons.

Cleaning Up the Mess

Letโ€™s not avoid talking about one of the very obvious results of crafting with kiddos: the dreaded mess. Crafts can be pretty messy, but hereโ€™s the good news: CLEAN UP can be easy (and safe) too. We used Branch Basics concentrate + water to make their all-purpose cleaner, and it did the job perfectly! Plus, because of the natural formulations of Branch Basics products, you can totally get your kiddos in on the clean-up action too!
