Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • It’s a classic recipe made at home – everyone loves a good ole coffee shop caramel macchiato, and this one is SO EASY to pull off at home!
  • It’s customizable – swap the heavy cream for half and half, the whole milk for any milk you love, and adjust the maple syrup to your desired sweetness.

Caramel Macchiato Recipe Ingredients

Five simple ingredients stand between you and the caramel macchiato coffee creamer of your dreams! Find ingredient notes (including substitutions and swaps) below.

  • Heavy whipping cream – though this recipe calls for heavy cream, adding to the decadent creaminess of the drink, you can absolutely use half and half in its place.
  • Whole milk – similar to above, feel free to use 2% or skim milk here, but know that you’ll get the creamiest result with whole milk.
  • Maple syrup – add more or less maple syrup to the recipe to suit your desired sweetness.
  • Caramel sauce – we used a store-bought caramel sauce here, but if you have a caramel recipe that you love, feel free to use it instead!

A full ingredient list with exact amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

Recipe Variations and Modifications

  • Swap the milks – we chose whole milk for this recipe, but you can truly use whatever you have on hand. Half and half, 2%, oat milk, and almond milk will all work.
  • Make it dairy-free – to make this creamer dairy-free, use dairy-free heavy cream (Silk and Califia Farms both make one) or canned coconut milk in place of the heavy whipping cream and oat milk or almond milk in place of the whole milk.

How to Make a Caramel Macchiato

This creamer is super easy to make – all you need is a mason jar (or another similar jar/container) with a lid! Follow along below for the full how-to.

Step 1: Add the heavy cream, whole milk, maple syrup, caramel sauce, and salt to a mason jar and shake until well combined.

Step 2: Pour your coffee into a mug, about half of the way full.

Step 3: Fill the mug the rest of the way up with the creamer.

Step 4: Add homemade whipped cream, if you desire. Enjoy!

Recipe Tip

You can absolutely store your caramel macchiato creamer in the fridge, but because it’s homemade and does not contain any stabilizers, give it a good shake before pouring it into your coffee to combine any separation.

How to Serve

Serve your creamer with hot or iced coffee, and for the most coffee shop-like experience, be sure to dollop whipped cream (regular homemade whipped cream or dairy-free whipped cream) on top!

How to Store

Store the creamer in an airtight jar in the fridge. Be sure to check the expiration date on your milk and heavy cream – you’ll want to use your creamer by that date!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much caffeine is in a caramel macchiato?

The amount of caffeine in your drink is completely dependent on what kind of coffee you’re using. Espresso, regular drip coffee, and cold brew all have different amounts of caffeine.

What kind of coffee should I use for this recipe?

Espresso, drip coffee, or cold brew will all work. Use whichever is your favorite!

Is cold brew the same as iced coffee?

Cold brew and iced coffee are not the same! Cold brew is brewed in cold water for 12ish hours, making it higher in caffeine than regular brewed coffee. Iced coffee is brewed hot (think: regular brewed coffee in a coffee pot) and then poured over ice.

  • ¼ cup caramel sauce, plus extra to drizzle on top, if desired
  • ¼ teaspon salt

Recipe Notes

Note 1: skim, 2%, or any other milk will work just fine here
Note 2: reduce the amount of maple syrup or eliminate altogether depending on your desired sweetness

Note 3: if your caramel sauce doesn’t mix well right away, you can either pop it into a blender for a couple of seconds, OR just wait it out! In about 30 minutes, if you give it another shake, it should mix more evenly.

Note 4: make this recipe your own by adding more or less coffee/creamer. You can’t mess it up!

  1. This sounds delish but I’m not really a coffee drinker. Can you recommend something else to use besides coffee?
