Creamy Avocado Salsa Verde Recipe Ingredients

Here’s everything you’ll need to make a batch of this fresh and delicious avocado salsa verde. Find ingredient notes (including substitutions and swaps) below.

  • Avocado – rich, buttery avocado gives this sauce its thick and creamy texture.
  • Sour Cream – a ¼ cup of sour cream (or, if you’re dairy-free, the cream from the top of a can of full-fat coconut milk) adds to the creamy factor and makes the salsa silky.
  • Cilantro – is there such a thing as too much cilantro? Not in this sauce! A ⅓ cup of cilantro (leaves and stems) add the most delicious flavor.
  • Fresh Lime Juice – 2 tablespoons of fresh lime juice (the juice from about 1 lime) gives this recipe brightness.
  • Salsa Verde – veggie-packed salsa verde brings so much flavor to this dish. Follow our easy homemade Salsa Verde recipe, or use a jar of the store-bought stuff.
  • Water – to thin everything out, you’ll need a ½ cup of water.

A full ingredient list with exact amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

Recipe Variations and Modifications

  • Go dairy-free – Swap cream from the top of a can of full-fat coconut milk for sour cream to make this recipe vegan.

How to Make Our Creamy Salsa Verde

You won’t believe how quick and easy it is to make this restaurant favorite at home in just one step!

Step 1: Add all of the ingredients in a blender and blend together until completely smooth.
Easy-peasy!

Recipe Tips

  • You’ve got two options for the Salsa Verde this recipe calls for as the base of this sauce. Our easy homemade Salsa Verde recipe yields three cups of sauce. You’ll use 16 ounces (AKA two cups) of it in this recipe, which will give you a cup leftover for other dishes. Or, take a shortcut and use a store-bought salsa verde made with tomatillos.
  • If you like your salsa extra-spicy, toss a fresh jalapeño or serrano pepper to the blender!
  • Don’t toss those cilantro stems! Just like cilantro leaves, they’re packed with bright, fresh flavor. If you’re worried about the texture, you’ll never notice it once the salsa is blended together.

How to Serve

Drizzle this super versatile (and highly addictive!) sauce on everything from tacos to fajitas, nachos to huevos rancheros, black beans, grilled chicken, seafood, steak, and veggies…and pretty much anything with classic Mexican or Tex-Mex flavors. You can also serve it as a dip with veggies, tortilla chips, or plantain chips.

How to Store

This avocado salsa verde is best stored in an airtight jar or container in the refrigerator.

We don’t recommend freezing this sauce: while it wouldn’t be a total disaster frozen and thawed, the quality of both the taste and texture will definitely be compromised. It’s best to eat this salsa fresh within three days.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Ingredients are in Salsa Verde?

While recipes differ, the main ingredients in traditional Salsa Verde are tomatillos, onion, garlic, jalapeño, lime, cilantro, and salt.

How is This Creamy Salsa Verde Different Than Regular Salsa Verde?

This creamy version takes the traditional Salsa Verde and adds rich avocado and sour cream for a luscious sauce that’s the best of both worlds!

What is the Difference Between Avocado Salsa Verde and Guacamole?

While guacamole and avocado salsa verde are both used in Tex-Mex-style cooking, the two are very different. Authentic guacamole is made primarily of avocado that has been mashed and then mixed with finely diced tomatoes, red onions, garlic, jalapeno, lime juice, and cilantro. It’s really thick and most often used as a chip dip. This avocado salsa verde, on the other hand, does include avocado and many of the same flavors as guacamole, but it is a thinner, smoother sauce intended to be drizzled on tacos, burrito bowls, and more!

How Long Does Creamy Salsa Verde Keep?

We recommend enjoying this sauce (on anything and everything!) for up to 3 days after making.
