This wine margarita is the perfect accompaniment to any summertime BBQ or gathering!
Table of Contents
Torn between a crisp glass of wine and a refreshing margarita? Now you can have both! I’ve combined two of my favorite loves, wine, and tequila, to make the most deliciously refreshing cocktail. Truth be told, I wasn’t sure I was going to like it when I set out to test this recipe, but I sure was pleasantly surprised. The wine and margarita combination is everything I want sangria to be but better!
Recipe Ingredients
- Wine – this is one of the key components here. You’ll need a bottle of wine (approximately 3 cups), and to be quite honest, you can’t really go wrong here – any wine of choice will work (red, white, rose, or even sparkling!).
- Tequila – for the margarita portion of this drink, you’ll need 3 cups of tequila.
- Triple Sec – 1 ½ cups of triple sec gives a distinct orange flavor to the mix.
- Lime Juice – 1 ½ cups of fresh lime juice adds brightness and acidity.
- Agave – 6 tablespoons of agave adds a hint of sweetness to the batch.
The ingredients above will make 12 servings. To adjust up or down, use the following ratios:
- 2 parts wine
- 2 parts tequila
- 1 part triple sec
- 1 part lime juice
- ¼ part agave
Ingredient Modifications
Here are some ideas for how to make this wine margarita the cocktail of your dreams!
- Use orange juice – in place of the triple sec, use fresh orange juice at a 1:1 ratio.
- Use a different wine – in place of the red wine, sub in white wine or a crisp rose. Any wine of your liking will do!
- Make a mocktail – use a non-alcoholic wine, Ritual zero proof tequila, and a zero proof triple sec to make this cocktail alcohol free.
How to Make a Red Wine Margarita
This is truly such an easy cocktail to mix together. Here’s what you’ll do:
- Pour the ingredients – add all of your ingredients to a large pitcher.
- Stir – stir or whisk to combine.
- Serve over ice and enjoy!
Optional: Chill the mix in the refrigerator for a couple of hours before serving. Garnish your glasses with a salted rim and slice of lime.
Wine Margarita Variations
Frozen Wine Margarita
To make a frozen wine margarita, you’ll want to freeze your triple sec, lime juice, and agave together in an ice cube tray, then blend with your wine and tequila when you are ready to serve.
White Wine Margarita
To make this a white wine margarita, here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 bottle white wine (Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Chenin Blanc, etc.)
- 3 cups blanco tequila
- 1 ½ cups of triple sec
- 1 ½ cups of fresh lime juice
- 6 tablespoons of agave
Wine Margarita Mocktail
To make a wine margarita mocktail, here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 bottle of non-alcoholic wine
- 3 cups of zero proof Ritual tequila
- 1 ½ cups of zero proof triple sec
- 1 ½ cups of fresh lime juice
- 6 tablespoons of agave
How to Serve
This wine margarita pairs deliciously with shrimp tacos, carne asada tacos, or Instant Pot barbacoa, and you can never go wrong with chips and a side of guacamole if you ask me.
Can you make wine margaritas in advance?
You can absolutely make these wine margaritas a day or so in advance! This gives plenty of time for the cocktail to chill in the fridge so that it is ready for when your guests arrive.
